696.0. "Black Rose" by KAOFS::M_COTE (I'm a mod, not a rocker) Wed Apr 28 1993 14:53

I'm looking to procure the infamous Black Rose for my garden. Would
anyone know where it might be found?

maybe in Holland (or is that the home of the black tulip only), but you may have
trouble inmporting seeds/plants (federal health restrictions on live stuff like
animals, food, and plants, etc...).

For those that don't know, Mike is just jealous because I have an
offical "Blue Jay" rose. Renamed from some other name, I am sure due to
the World Series victory last year. I promise to bring in a bloom for
Mike once it flowers. Not as good as owning one, but that's his
    problem.

Ha! Jealous of a 'Blue Jay' rose. I just may have ordered a
rose which blooms to the full colour and shape of the American flag.
One must take special care of the planting orientation else it will
appear that the flag is actually waving in the wind backwards.
Also allowing the flower to wilt and fall to earth may be grounds for
    'Defacing the flag'
Talk about defacing, the BoooJays are going to get mopped up this
    year by the Colorado Rockies.

Thanks Shawn for the offer. I'm still looking for the infamous
    Black Rose though.

You can find a Black Rose in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It's the one with
the red light outside. Bring some protection though.

Derek, (can I call you darel)

The rosebush I concede, bared a rose for its master once, but
let it be known, the the blueJay Rose will bloom nomore. It will wilt
and fall to the ground, to be tread on by more deserving gardeners.
The other buds are there to entice its master to spend more money
hoping for another rose next year. But it won't come , I'm telling
    ya.

Well the second crop of "Blue Jay" roses is out, and due to popular
demand (girlfriend) I won't be able to bring any of these in for you
to enjoy Mike. The fragrance is very strong, and pleasant.

I suppose you could call it the sweet smell of success.

    	DEREK,

Today I'm glancing at the USA Today and what do I see:

ROSES ARE BLUE: After 10 years of trying, Burpee seed company
unveils a blue rose. Well, sort of.

' A true blue rose a eluded breeders for years, but Burpee has done
the next best thing. They've bred a wild blue lisianthus with so many
petals that cup and unfold that it looks just like a rose. The feat
    took 10 years.'

    	The article goes on...

The lisianthus has no thorns and is virtually pest free. Each plant
produces about 100 flowers from June to September. When cut, they last
    two weeks.

It is a little sad that your less endowed plant was unable to
produce such wonderment. I would imagine the black rose will never
be realised. A dream at best.

You're comments please. (pls no references to Quebec ;^) )

    >>Today I'm glancing at the USA Today and what do I see ?

I wouldn't trust that paper as far as I could ride a paper airplane
made from it. I saw a few years ago that LA was going to beat Edmonton
in the NHL playoffs (you know, when they had the Great One, Messier,
Kurri, Coffey....) because, well who cares what bogus reasons they came
up with, it was so far from reality that I had to laugh. I suggest you
go in for intensive deprogramming when you return. It would appear the
US of A is startting to rub off on you. If you were here, with a clear
head, you would realize that the Americans are sick to their stomach
over the potential repeat of the Blue Jays, and are doing everything in
their bag of dirty tricks to discredit the team. Such misinformation is
all part of a much larger conspiricy, and I am surprised that a fine
intellect such as yours could not see that. Hurry home, to the land of
free medical care, and get yourself some, you need it.

I'd say it was money well spent.
I think the Philly gardener should put a little less fertilizer on his
    roses next year though.
