674.0. "Camping in the Ottawa Hull area" by TROOA::DEBOER () Thu Apr 01 1993 09:37

In the first two weeks in june I am on a DEC training course in Hull
rather than staying in the Hotel I was going to take the family along
as well as our trailer to stay in. I am looking for a good campground
in the Ottawa Hull area. Would like something with full serviced sites
(hydro sewage water hookups) as well as something for the kids (pool).
Last year as we all know was a cold summer and we ended up having
nights below the freezing point and therefore a indoor pool on the
grounds would be nice. The closest one I can find is in the camping
directories is in the Perth area. How far is this from The Hull traing
center and is this a reasonable commute back and forth everyday? Any
    info would be appreciated.

Your best bet is Lac Phillipe which is about a 20-min drive from the Hull site
with hardly any traffic to contend with.

It's fully serviced and should be fairly quiet that time of year. There is a
very nice clean lake, general store, but no indoor pool though. I can't think
of any camping sites near here that do have indoor swimming pools.

If you want information, you can call the National Capital Commission in Ottawa.
I should be able to post the phone number here tomorrow.

Or there's the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Campground in the West-end
between Moodie Drive and Eagleson just North of the Queensway. It
is handy to Kanata or the OTO offices ... and a bit quicker to get
to Ottawa touristic things if you'll be doing tha.

674.3Perth is a long driveKAOOA::SLADEThu Apr 01 1993 11:3123
A drive from Perth to Ottawa would be about an hour and a half commute
one way to the Hull facility and one hour to Kanata. The only
campground I can think of near Perth is McGowen Lake (sp?) which is on
the far side of Perth, closer to Sharbot Lake. There is two Provincial
Parks in the Sharbot Lake area, too far to commute.

There is a couple of campgrounds on the Mississippi River or on
Mississippi Lake near Carleton Place. Can't think of the names of the
top of my head. Between Carleton Place and Ottawa there is a
campground at the Dwyer Hill road that I think has a pool. It may be
    seasonal only.

As Stuart mentioned, the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Campground is within
easy access to Ottawa, Dec Kanata and the Hull facility.

Lac Phillipe if a very attractive location in the Gatineau Hills and
near the Hull facility but I don't know about hook-ups.

There is also a Provincial Park with hook-ups called Fitzroy Harbour,
no pool but a beach area on the Ottawa River and good recreational
facilities. Some of the Ottawa FSE's live out that way.

674.4a vote for Lac PhillipeKAOFS::G_BREZINAThu Apr 01 1993 12:3120
re: .1, .2

Although I have not been to the Lac Phillipe, I live not far from there.
From Digital Hull you take Hwy 5 North (10 min), continue on Hwy 105 (5 min),
before Wakefield turn left on Hwy 366 to Masham (7min), at Francis Fuels
turn left to Lac Phillipe.
In my biased opinion easy commuting and natural beauty make it incomparable
to anything you can find on the Ontario side of the Ottawa River.

If you choose a West End location (.2), you are not really that much closer
to downtown Ottawa and most of your daily commuting will be with the traffic.
(Forget about Perth, it's too far.)

Be ready for the bug season. In my experience the most vicious mosquitoes
may be found in larger numbers in the lower locations (Ontario) while the
black flies thrive in the unspoiled nature up North.

674.5Another vore for Lac PhillipeKAOFS::D_STREETVirtue is relativeThu Apr 01 1993 12:565
The Lac Phillipe option will provide a much better camping experience.
The other one is a campsite in the middle of a city. Not what I go
    camping for.

Fitzroy Harbour is very nice and has bigger and more private lots than Lac
Phillipe. The drive though will take you at least 1.5 hours on the Ontario
side and maybe 1 hour on the Quebec side if you take the ferry. Of course
the ferry will cost you about $4.50 everytime you use it.

There is a provincial park along the Rideau river just outside of
Kemptville. Distance wise it's not much further than Fitzroy Harbour
and in many ways it's a little more practical in that Kemptville
offers more amenities than Fitzroy. (ie: it's a bigger town)

Maybe somebody knows the name of the park.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to look up some of these places on
my maps tonight and then maybe make some calls. If there are any other
    suggestions just keep them coming.

Wait a minute lads. This guy is from Sarnia!!!!!

Are you sure there are no other camping ideas for him??

What about the rifle range just off Carling???

He can't really be from Sarnia because if he was he wouldn't be going
away for a vacation. Sarnia is the most incredible place in the entire
universe. It's even listed in the Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

I knew this would get turned around sooner or later. Next comes the
    Grand canal Campground suggestions.

Yes he really is from Sarnia.....

Yes he is leaving Sarnia for a few weeks. Actually the trailer has been
sitting at a friends farm downwind from the chemical valley collecting
contaminated fallout all winter. What I was hoping to do was get up to
your neck of the woods and get a good rain to wash it down and leave some
of that good chemical stuff behind.

So you don't really need electrical hook-ups if your trailer glows in
    the dark!

I have an Ontario Private Campground directory somewhere at home. I'll
take a look this weekend (if I can find it).
