577.0. "Ferry to Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast" by PETRUS::PAUL (Oliver Paul, ISE LC Frankfurt/Germany (FRO)) Tue Jun 09 1992 05:09

    Hi,

    I want to visit Vancouver Island with my family at the end of July. We
    booked a Motorhome in Vancouver and want to spend some time on Vancouver
    Island. A friend of mine who has been to Canada a lot of times (B.C. and
    other areas) told me that it would be nicer to travel along the "Sunshine
    Coast" and then ferry across to Vancouver Island.

    I like that idea and my plan is :

    1. Ferry from West Vancouver/Horseshoe Bay to Langdale

    2. Highway 101 to Earls Cove

    3. Ferry from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay

    4. Highway 101 to Powell River/Westview

    5. Ferry from Powell River/Westview to Courtenay/Little River

    6. Spend some time on Vancouver Island

    7. Ferry from Victoria to Vancouver

    I have some questions concerning the ferry :

    Do the all these ferry transport Motorhomes ?

    Do you have to book the ferry in advance or can you usually take the
    "next" ferry (short queues) ?

    How much do these ferry cost (approx.) ?

    How often do they ferry across ? Every day ?

    Thanx in advance,

    oli

577.1Some BC Ferries InfoVAOU09::BOTMANpieterThu Jun 11 1992 20:4024
    I just called BC Ferries.

    Approx cost for an overheight vehicle, for one leg (Horseshoe Bay -
    Langdale): $29.50 for first 20 feet of vehicle
                    2.00 for each additional foot of vehicle
                    5.50 for driver
                    5.50 for each additional passenger

    For sunshine coast, only one fare applies - ie pay only once to get
    from Horseshoe Bay through to Powell River.

    Pay again to get from Powell River to Comox. Same fare, I'm told.
    Pay again to get from Vanc Island (Schwartz Bay near Victoria) to
    Tsawassen.  Also same fare.

    I'm told that all ferries on these legs can take overheight vehicles
    so you don't have to reserve (I don't even think you can on all
    ferries).

    Hope this helps.

    Hi pieter,

    thank you very much for calling BC Ferries and the exact info.

    Do you know if the BC Ferries are leaving every day or are there any
    restrictions due to weekends or holidays (around July 21st- August 3rd)?

    Ciao,

577.3Vanc' Island is .. beautifulIOSG::JOHNSONRIt could grip it by the husk!Fri Jun 12 1992 06:1615

    I was in Vancouver last summer for three weeks. I hitchhicked up
    Vancouver Island from Victoria to a beautiful small Island called
    Sointula. Unfortunately I missed out Tofino cos I ran out of time.
    All I can say is ENJOY.

    It won't be that beautiful for ever cos us humans don't know how to
    take care of places like that. The old-growth forests are disappearing
    faster each year.

I don't know about the one up at the north end, but the Tsawassen (right
out side Vancouver) ferry leaves every couple of hours.

577.5Frequent SailingsVAOU09::BOTMANpieterMon Jun 15 1992 18:2511
    All of the ferries you have in mind run many times daily, the most
    frequent being Schwartz Bay <-> Tsawassen and Horseshoe Bay <->
    Nanaimo.

    During long holiday weekends (Mon Aug 3 is such here in BC) one
    can assume more sailings, not fewer. However, one should allow for
    crowds and possible waits.

    Bon Voyage
    Pieter

577.6Tsawassen to NanaimoSUBURB::PULLANRin the rain ???Tue Jun 30 1992 10:388
    FWIW, there is a new(ish) ferry service from Tsawassen to Nanaimo which
    I used earlier this month.
    Port Alberni to Tofino is a beautiful drive. I made the mistake of
    forgetting to fill up with gas before leaving Alberni (in England you
    can expect a petrol station every 1/2 mile or so), but I made it by
    coasting on the downhills.
