556.1 | Q & A, part I... | KAOOA::HASIBEDER | Trekkie DECie | Mon Mar 23 1992 11:24 | 34 |
| Whew, lots of good questions!
1) Train tickets may be purchased at the station, and
2) yes there is VIA Rail train service between Ottawa and Toronto.
Travel time is about 3-4 hours I believe.
3) To get from Ottawa to Hull, specifically the train station to the
CTH facility, the best is rental car or taxi. Taxi would probably
cost over $25.00, car rentals can cost from $30.00 and up per day.
However, DISCOUNT auto rentals will deliver the car to you, which is
Convenient, as I don't believe there are car rental counters at the
train station. Travel time would be 20-30 minutes. There is no
"Shuttle" as such.
4) COST: ??
5) What to do in Toronto? The zoo, CN Tower, Canada's Wonderland
(amusement park), etc.... there's lots! In Ottawa, lots of museums
especially Aviation and the Science and Technology ones (good for
kids). Oh yeah, in Toronto, the Ontario Science Centre. Best to
try and pick up some brochures. Maybe someone can provide info for
the Ontario Visitor's Bureau.
As for visiting CTH, best make arrangements ahead of time, since even
an employee of DEC should have an escort. Contact Bob Benoit at DTN
640-7133. He co-ordinates customer visits, so he should be able to
help you.

Happen to have a VIA Rail schedule right here.
This is last summer's schedule, so times might have changed slightly...
There seem to be three trains a day leaving Toronto; one at 7:30a, one at
12:25p, and one at 5:00p. They arrive at 12:10, 16:50, and 20:59.
Trains operate in the reverse direction at 8:10a, 12:00n, and 17:30,
arriving in Toronto at 12:19, 16:25, and 21:29.
The first train in each direction does not operate on Sundays.

| Yes, it has or will be changing ...
They intended to add another train to make 4 per day.
Recently though, they have been having problems with cracked axles in
the new trains, so they've taken them all off and testing them. The
old old old 1950s trains have run in their place, so goodness knows
what impact this will have had on schedules.

| Thank you so much for your super-quick responses; however, to follow
up:
1) You mentioned VIA Rail train. Would you be so kind to send me a
copy of the latest schedule (if it's not an inconvenience) or
submit the address and phone?
2) Is the Ontario Visitor's Bureau the equivalent of our Chamber of
Commerce, in the U.S.? (This is where one can obtain information
on topics of interest such as entertainment, sightseeing events,
etc.)
3) How far is DEC's Ottawa site from Hull?
4) Is Hull predominatly French-speaking? How populated is it? What's
its ethnicity?
5) Does DEC in Toronto, Ottawa or Hull provide any ammenities (i.e.,
transportation from the train station to its site) to its visiting
DECcies? (Yes, I know, I know, I'm being rather presumptous!!)
Thank you again for your rocket replies...

| Well, I'll tackle the ones I can...
3) There is CTH (Hull), OTO (Ottawa Sales, SW, FS), an KAO (Kanata -
mostly manufacturing). KAO-OTO ~5 miles, OTO-CTH ~15 miles, and
CTH-KAO ~20 miles.
4) Yes (French). But most people are bilingual to some degree.
5) No.

>> 4) Yes (French). But most people are bilingual to some degree.
.. NOT .. I would considerthe CTH predominately English.'Cept for
a French Immersion Officer stalking around, and maybe a couple of "French
facility" wantabees, it is an extension of the Kanata Facility

| Mike, if you would read all the words and look beyond the small
confines of your own skull, you would notice that question # 4 was
about HULL, the city, not CTH, the Digital facility in Hull.
But your response was kind of interesting anyway...

| Mario:
Yes, Node AIMTEC is from the Customer Support Center in Atlanta,
Georgia. I must admit that Canadians do have a dry sense of humor
which is okay by me. I often read this notesfile (when I need a break
from my taxing Technical Resource job) and find it politically
refreshing! I can count on a debate heating up between Quebec and the
other (9 or 10) provinces. I often wonder though:
. so what if Quebec wants to sever ties with the other provinces?
. How would the other provinces be affected?
. Do the other provinces depend solely on Quebec for most of its
resources?
. Would Quebec profit economically (in housing and other amenities)
and the other provinces won't, if they sever ties?
. Would you have two Presidents? Sorry, you don't have presidents, do
you? Okay, would Quebec elect a President and the other provinces a
King? (I may be way off base here, so forgive me, will ya!)
. Would Quebec expect newcomers from the other provinces to speak
French solely?
What exactly is your gripe? A wondering mind wants to know...
BTW, you and Cote must be friends... he didn't reply to your comment.
So what does "Le diable est aux vaches!" mean? I'd be in hot waters if
I landed in Quebec, won't I!

| . so what if Quebec wants to sever ties with the other provinces?
. How would the other provinces be affected?
>>> Quebec makes up 1/4 of Canada's population. Who knows what would
happen? How would the U.S./States feel if some of the states that
make up 1/4 of the population of the U.S. decided they wanted to
be on their own.
. Do the other provinces depend solely on Quebec for most of its
resources?
>>> Can't say the rest of the Country depends on Quebec for most of
it's resources. Even if they did and Quebec separated why would
we not be trading partners like we are currently with the U.S?
. Would Quebec profit economically (in housing and other amenities)
and the other provinces won't, if they sever ties?
>>> Most people agree that a breakup would be very costly for all
Canadians, especially Quebeckers. Some studies go as far as
stating that Quebeckers would be up to $1800 in additional taxes
for many years after.
. Would you have two Presidents? Sorry, you don't have presidents, do
you? Okay, would Quebec elect a President and the other provinces a
King? (I may be way off base here, so forgive me, will ya!)
>>> Probably 2 Prime Ministers.
. Would Quebec expect newcomers from the other provinces to speak
French solely?
>>> No. I know MANY people in Quebec who don't speak 1 word of French
or understand it at all and they get along fine. Only the radicals
and the chronic whiners complain. The only problem is Quebec's
language law which prohibits the use of any other language on
commercial bill-boards (i.e. no non-French signs on store fronts).
What exactly is your gripe? A wondering mind wants to know...
>>> Not a separatist and I think that separatists are totally out of
their minds.
BTW, you and Cote must be friends... he didn't reply to your comment.
So what does "Le diable est aux vaches!" mean? I'd be in hot waters if
I landed in Quebec, won't I!
>>> Mike Cote has no friends because he was born in Quebec and he
deserted us shortly after...:-)

556.13 | We already have two prime ministers | VAOU02::BOTMAN | pieter | Tue Jul 14 1992 00:26 | 14 |
| In Quebec, the term for the leader is "premier ministre". (Translated
into Anglo that is "prime minister". Anglos call all provincial
leaders "premiers".
Anglos call the Canadan leader the "prime minister". Francophones call
the Prime Minister (of Canada) "premier ministre du Canada".
If you're sensitive to languages at all you can't help but notice that
the Quebecers accord as much significanc to the provincial leader as
they do to the "national" leader. Of course, this is consistent with
Quebec nationalist ideology, the Quebec is a nation unto itself...

| All of you in this notesfile entry have been very gracious. Just
wanted to say, "THANX!"
Well, the time has finally arrived. We'll be leaving Atlanta for
Toronto on July 31st. I will be making arrangements here to take the
train from Toronto to Ottawa. Will check on ways to get to Hull. My
girlfriend may be willing to taking me.
I got in touch with Bob Benoit to make arrangements for the "tour" and
I have also gotten in touch with Barbara Stone and her counterpart
Jennifer Risdon to visit the Centre in Toronto.
I understand the weather hasn't been up to par there. I'll bring some
of Atlanta's sun.
Until then, arivadeci...
