531.0. "Touring in the winter time" by SHIRE::BOWEN () Sat Dec 07 1991 18:55

    Hi there,
I'll be in Quebec for three weeks starting December 22nd and I have
    some questions to ask.

How are the road conditions during that period of the year ?
Will I need to rent a four wheel drive car or will a two wheel drive
    do ?

It it really that cold every day ?

Any hockey game I shouldn't miss ? (big league)

Will I be a moneyless smoker and drinker when I leave ?
(I know I should quit anyways...)

What have Quebec really done to the language they gave you ?
(The French I mean). Will I be able to understand anything at all ?
There is a radio program here in Geneva (Couleur 3) which passes
interviews of people from Quebec at lunch time for two month in
cooperation with a radio from Montreal and I must admit that sometimes
I find it hard to understand even though French is my mother tongue.

How much does it cost average to rent a "scooter des neiges" ?

Thanks for your feedback, it will be much appreciated.

    Well here's a start:

    1.	Consider purchasing cigarettes and alcohol at the duty-free when
leaving for Canada to save a few dollars.

    2.	Road conditions of course vary, but I don't think a 4 wheel drive
is necessary, UNLESS you plan on spending most of your time touring
the countryside. If you plan on staying on main highways on
visiting urban areas a properly equipped 2 wheel (I suggest you
    	get a front-wheel drive) vehicle.

    3.	Temperatures vary greatly from cold to extremely cold. Bring
    	your winter clothing!

I can't comment on the French language stuff, but since French is your
mother tongue, you should have an easy time of it.
531.2Montreal Canadiens for hockey!TROOA::MSCHNEIDERvi.... the editor from hell!Sun Dec 08 1991 09:175
Oh yes ... you have two locations that offer the oppourtunity to watch
professional hockey. One is Quebec City and the other is Montreal. I
suggest you skip Quebec as the Quebec Nordiques are competing for last
place, whereas the legendary Montreal Canadiens are competing for first
    place!

The Montreal Canadiens are really competing to eliminate Quebec from the
    playoffs, nothing more really. :0)

By the way, when is the winter festival in Quebec city?

    Thanks
    George

George, have you now descended to the lower reaches of decency by
entering this den of eniquity of a notes conference? You're in serious
jeopardy of losing your moderatorship in the CELTS file!

Forget the Quebec Winter Carnival, come to Ottawa's Winterlude during
the first week of February. Besides, you'll meet more Noters in Ottawa
    and see more Irish pubs!

    Slan go foill,

Any way I could talk someone into buying several of this year's
BonHomme Carnival characters for me? I'm looking for those little
plastic statuettes (about 3 inches or 7 centimeters tall) that
they always told us to wear on our jackets while we were kids or
else we would get thrown into the ice castle's dungeon. :-)
I'll reimburse the cost of the statuettes and the postage.

    Thanks,
    B.

And Winterlude takes place in Ottawa from 7 February to 16 February.

Why go to Qubec when Winterlude is better?!

How can you possibly miss the World Outdoor Barrel Jumping Tournament?!

And Korff Barbunk or whatever his name is.
