527.0. "GST Rebate Question!" by ELWOOD::HOWARD () Mon Dec 02 1991 12:50

Hi,

My husband and I visited Quebec this past August and are now just getting
around to filing our rebate on the GST incurred from our trip.

My accommodation receipt lists the following:

		Day 1
	Room charge/night	$66.88
	TPS $4.68
	Balance $71.56

		Day 2
	Room charge/night	$66.88
	TPS $4.68
	Balance $71.56

The GST Rebate instructions for Accommodations are:

1. If your receipt for accommodation shows the GST separately, enter the
    total amound of GST paid.

2. If your receipt shows the GST as one total amount, add the price of
accommodation (excluding provincial sales tax) and multiply by 7%.

3. If your receipt does not identify the GST separately, but has a
statement that all amounts shown include the GST, total the next cost of
accommodation (excluding provincial sales tax) and multiply by 6.54%.

4. If the actual amount of GST paid is not shown on your receipts, claim
    $5 (Canadian) for each night.

Is the TPS the "Provincial Sales Tax"? What calculation would you suggest
that I use?

Thanks for your help!

TPS is the french initials for GST.

Further to .1

And "TPQ" is the Qubec provincial tax, which is not charged on hotel rooms,
but which you may find on other receipts.

Could you please let us know what they send you? Years ago I had Ontario
refund their provincial tax, and they sent me a $US check, but there is
no indication on the GST form for specifying what currency you want your
refund issued in. (I did my last GST refund at a duty-free store on my
way INTO Canada on a future trip and got cash to use for that day.)

and what's the process?

Thanks,

Form was available at duty-free shops on the way out of Canada.
Process is fill it in and send with receipts to Canada Customs. they
process and send you back a check for the amount of the GST being
    refunded.
