    Observations-Changes on/in Southern Nova Scotia: Just got back(9/10/91)
                 How I perceived it.
    
    WARNING: This could bore you to a deep coma status..or in the local
              Yarmouth street-talk...bore you to making your brain like
              lobster bait.
    
     Pollution: No more Irish Moss( a harvested sea grass used for Pectin)
                started with a few patches of dead, bleached sections and spread
                to the entire Tusket Island Chain. This ends a way of life
                for the entire Yarmouth southern NS area.
             
                Clams...Red tide within the island area..you can dig and
                        eat them but could be hazardous to your health.
    
                The large mackeral and Blue fish catches(1 bait barrel/hr)
                are history..due to 3 mile long floating nets off tip
                of Cape Forchu (Yarmouth light bar). The Russian "factory-
                processing" ships help deplete this source also.
    
                
     Traditional: The siblings no longer move into the "family home" and
                  care for the aging parents..with Scallop fishing and
                  large lobster catches and herring fishing the siblings
                  can afford the independance of a new home.
    
                  Oncoming traffic still pulls over to the side of the road
                  when a funeral procession is observed either side(country
                  roads)of the traffic lane...
                   
                  The bootleggers are alive and prospering!
    
     Economy:     Average take last year for the first week of Lobster
                  fishing $60,000 Canadian(375 traps max) Some were saying
                  7-15 lobster per trap
    
                  Herring..fairly good..housewives supplemented their
                           income by "pulling Roe" for $100.00 a day
                           (however this is seasonal)
    
                  Downtown Yarmouth business was poor except for the
                  expenditures by the fisherman.            
    
                  Restaurant prices were equivalent to Washington DC
                  prices..example-T bone=$18.50CA,Fish dinner=$9.50CA
    
                  Nova Scotian Tartan cloth mill still closed-speculation
                  that Moosehead ale to take over building for a brewery.
    
                  Housing..terrible
    
                  Taxes..multiple this year(someones gotta pay for the
                         "rocking chair" winter checks and welfare checks).
                   
    
    
   OK that's enough boredom! How about the rest of you Canucks? lets hear
    about your local economy as you see it and not how the politicians want
    it pictured.

    Speaking of Economy and Nova Scotia...
    
    I seem to remember a trip I made as a teenager along the TransCanada
    where we passed through three little towns about 2-3 miles apart
    called...
    
    	Upper Economy
    	Middle Economy
    	Lower Economy
    
    Are they still there, or did the current 'economy' force them to
    consolidate into a single entity (ie. Lowest Economy)?

	My understanding was that these towns, Upper Economy, Middle
	Economy and Lower Economy, are actually on the border between	
	the States and Canada, and therefore share alot from both cultures.

	The last I heard was that Lowest Economy had been removed from
	the maps as it was perported to not exist at all.

	Middle economy has turned into a huge industrial center exporting
	everything it manufactures. It is reported that this town
	is so generous in its exports to the other two towns ( and a
	mysterious fourth city called Aut Awa), that it is hoping to change
	its name to Lowest Economy. The Upper Economy townfolk don't think
	this is necessary, but don't mind as they have all read that
	the original town of Lower Economy does not exist at all and
	as long as Middle Econmy keeps up its exports.

	The proud folk of Lower Economy have been screaming blue
	murder about this, as they maintain that not only is their
	town very real, but also quite a bit larger (population-wise)
	than Upper Economy. Lower Economy has only 100 acres in its borders
	and for years has been trying to get land from the bordering Upper
	Economy, but messengers sent to that land quickly return beaten up,
	telling the Lower Economy Elders that those lands of Upper Economy
	are not to be used but simply keep for posterity.

	The Lower Economy folk think this is preposterous, as they would
	like more land to build industry and help out the hard working people
	of Middle Economy in the export industry. They also wonder why
	Upper Economy does not have industry of its own, but all reports
	from Upper Economy are quite vague and inconclusive.

	The whole situation is getting quite ugly, but the far away city
	of Aut Awa (some say it is as far away as the Moon) may be sending
	Mini Stir Gods to clean every thing up.

	Many folks from, both the towns of Middle and Lower Economy, are
	however, quite certain that no-one actually lives in Aut Awa. It
	is actually a vaction spot for the townfolk of Upper Economy.

	More later, as the stomach churns...

    I am a Nova Scotian and can tell you the economies are still where they
    were. Does this make sense?

    Where they were *when* ?????  (Although the maritime economies are
    usually run in the range depressed to economic collapse most of the
    time anyway ...! :-))
