When I was on holiday in Toronto (I came from the UK), I picked up the
yellow pages, phoned AVIS and asked for the Digital rate and gave them
the Digital number. (The nuber is in this notes conf)
They said that, with Digital people, they ALWAYS give unlimited mileage,
and their price for Digital employees was good too.
When I went to get the car, they upgraded my choice for free, even
though they had a medium car available.
I can't vouch for Montreal, but I wouldn't have thought that they had
different policies in different areas............unless someone here
can tell you differently........

Thanks for the reply.
Would any of the Canadian members of this conference care to
post the telephone number of the AVIS office in Montreal?
If someone can respond in an hour or so I can pass the number
on before leaving for the weekend.

Although persons who are citizens of many European countries may now travel
to the U.S. by air without first obtaining a visa, they still must have a
visa to enter the U.S. from Canada by land (rental car, bus, train, or foot).

| John raised a very pertinent issue.
There have been a number of incidences where citizens from Europe have
landed in the US, rented a car and drove into Canada for a visit. Upon
returning to the US, they were refused entry because they didn't have a visa.
How they eventually were able to get back into the US to catch their return
flight to Europe, I don't know.
This is a much more devastating situation than the one John sited and
travellers to North America should be made aware of it before coming here.

Well I just called the American embassy in Paris and I learned that
a French citizen who enters the U.S. from Canada as a tourist will
not encounter any problems, as long as he is prepared to show his
return trip ticket to customs officials. This is a policy that
was inaugurated 15 days ago, probably due to the sort of problems
alluded to earlier in this note.

I plan to drive in Canada this summer. I want to make a big loop covering
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec city, and Montreal.
Is it cheaper to rent a car from AVIS in the US than from AVIS in Canada?
If it is, then I will fly from San Francisco to Bangor, Maine, rent a car
in Bangor and drive to Canada. I assume that there is American Airlines
flight to Bangor. Otherwise, I will fly to Montreal and rent a car there.
Does anybody know?

| There is probably very little in it ... check under
VTX TRAVEL
and look in the car rental programs entry for Digital Rates ... and
beware of the differences among participating locations for mileage
restrictions ...

| The rates are very close; they were cheaper in Canada the last time I rented
in Vancouver, but the GST and provincial taxes in the East may change that.
But the difference may not be enough to pay for extra air fares.

| Are Canada freeway road signs in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia,
like those in California? Here in California, the signs are numerous, well
laid out in advance of the way, so that I can drive from A to B without
using a map but by simply following the signs. And, if I missed an exit,
I can quickly turn around.
I always have a hard time driving in Massachusetts. I get lost all the
times. I hope Canada freeway signs are easy to navigate by.

| I've made a few trips to NS, NB and PQ and never had a problem with the
road signs. The big change in NS and NB is the gaps between cities
and towns, lots of open country to enjoy while cruisin' the Trans
Canada.

| On the open highway it is generally quite easy because the towns are
signposted on the highways, but around the cities the Road Names are
usually signposted, or the highway number and a distant city are posted
so it can get a little confusing there. Be sure you've looked at a map
and know the highway numbers you want.
