I have an elderly relative moving to Quebec and wants to know how to register her car in Quebec province....what are the fees and any other requirements to put the car on the road....manditory insurance? sales taxes? title fees? The car is US made, does it have to be converted into km's? What about emmision testing? Advice needed...any quirks about the system is most appreciated... rf

99% of spedometers if you look closely have both MPH and KPH usually the KPH is more difficult to see....reddish Lloyd

Arrgggh! "KPH" -- one of my pet peeves. The correct abbreviation (the one on the speedometers, too) is "km/h". It must be in lower case letters. If you're going to use an international standard (like the metric system), use it correctly. /john

The first registration cost will depend on the date of the car owner's birth date. If it's soon it will be <50$. If it's in about 1 year then the cost will be about $200.00. This cost includes automatic insurance in case the owner becomes injured/disabled in a traffic accident. The yearly cost from then on is about $195.00, and as I understand, this cost went down by about $15-$20 in the last Quebec budget, depending on the driving record of the driver. I'm not sure where your relative is coming from but I know that if anyone from another province is moving into Quebec, they have to get a safety check. If your relative is coming from the U.S. there may be more involved than just a safety check. Quirks in the system? None that I have seen yet. Make sure she brings either a birth certificate or passport when going to the registration office. They don't accept anything else as proof that you were born. /Mario |
