| You're EVIL, Gary!
Good to hear from you though. Are you well? Hope so.
How do you think Les Habitants will fare against the Bs? I don't
feel very confident. I think they can win but also feel they are
making too many mental mistakes. Just hope they can stay out of
the penalty box. Power play has vastly improved over last years
( not hard to do that, says you) so maybe that will help. Should
be interesting I just hope it doesn't slide into the kind of mess
between Chicago and Minny.
Keep in touch. All the best to you and yours and Ryan's.
Ted.

But, nil desperandum!! Here are all the Jay's scores to date, plus their

Pat Borders committed an error to send the runner to third base, then

| 19-Apr -- Milwaukee Brewers (at Milwaukee) W 5-2
2 homers for John Olerud; Dave Steib pitches a complete game.
20-Apr -- Milwaukee Brewers (at Milwaukee) W 4-2
Jimmy Key gives up 6 hits over 7 innings; has 3 wins in 3 starts.
Duane Ward gets 2nd save of the season.
21-Apr -- Milwaukee Brewers (at Milwaukee) L 8-11 (10 innings)
Embarassing loss!! Jays led 8-3, bottom of the 8th -- the bullpen
gave up 7 walks and 8 runs to blow it.
22-Apr -- Boston Red Sox (at Boston) L 4-6
Jays led 4-1 at one point, but couldn't hold on for the win. Joe
Carter hit 3rd homer of the season.
23-Apr -- Boston Red Sox (at Boston) L 0-3
Roger Clemens gets 4th win in 4 games; no runs scored off him in
his last 30 innings pitched; his ERA is now 0.28!
24-Apr -- Boston Red Sox (at Boston) W 6-1
Jays "walked" this one -- literally. Boston gave up 7 walks, of
which 4 eventually came in to score. Dave Steib's record now 2-2.
25-Apr -- Detroit Tigers (at Toronto) W 3-2
Jays win a tight one, thanks to Joe Carter's bases-loaded 2 run
single, Jimmy Key's 4th straight win, and Duane Ward's 3rd save.
26-Apr -- Detroit Tigers (at Toronto) W 5-4
Jays lead 5-1 at one point, but nearly blew it. Duane Ward was the
hero again, getting his 4th save.
27-Apr -- Detroit Tigers (at Toronto) L 2-4
Costly 2-run error by John Olerud was the difference between the 2
teams. The game was watched by a regular season record crowd of
50,211.
28-Apr -- Detroit Tigers (at Toronto) W 9-6
Glenallen Hill went 4-for-4 to pace Jays' 15-hit attack over the
Tigers. Duane Ward's 3rd save of the series (5th in total).
Note: The 4-game series against Detroit was watched by over 200,000
people; the last 3 games each attracted over 50,000 spectators.

Mark Whiten's career high 4 rbi's pulled Jays back from a 3-0
deficit, but they were unable to hang on for the win.
1-May -- Texas Rangers (at Texas) L 0-3
44-year old Nolan Ryan stole the show with his 7th career no-
hitter, including 16 strikeouts. Ryan is the oldest pitcher to
throw a no-hitter; the previous oldest was --- Nolan Ryan, with his
6th no-hitter!
2-May -- Kansas City Royals (at Kansas) W 3-1
Roberto Alomar's homer, plus 2-hit pitching from Todd Stottlemeyer
(his 3rd win), Mike Timlin, and Duane Ward (his 6th save) snapped
the Jay's 2-game losing streak.
3-May -- Kansas City Royals (at Kansas) W 5-1
David Wells scattered 8 hits over 8 innings as the Jays kept pace
with Boston and Milwaukee on top of the A. L. East.
4-May -- Kansas City Royals (at Kansas) L 5-6
Jays trailed 6-0 after 4 innings, but battled back to within 1 run
of the Royals thanks to a 4-run 7th innings. Mark Whiten went
3-for-4; he's off to a great start to the season!
5-May -- Kansas City Royals (at Kansas) W 3-0
7 2/3 strong innings for Dave Steib (now 3-2 on the season) as the
Jays sealed the win with late runs in the 8th and 9th innings.

| 7-May -- Texas Rangers (at Toronto) L 2-3
Despite Roberto Alomar's 2-run homer, Jays still lost, mainly
because of a Devon White error, and 9 men left on base.
8-May -- Texas Rangers (at Toronto) W 4-2
Nolan Ryan's attempt at back-to-back no-hitters was foiled by
Roberto Alomar's 2-run triple in the 3rd inning. The win went to
Todd Stottlemyre (now 4-0), and Duane Ward got his 8th save.
9-May -- Chicago White Sox (at Toronto) W 2-0
A strong 8 inning 3-hit shutout from David Wells, Duane Ward's 9th
save, and 2 rbi's for Joe Carter (1 hr, 1 single) made the
difference in this game.
10-May -- Chicago White Sox (at Toronto) L 3-5 (12 innings)
Roberto Alomar's heroics (hr bottom of the 9th with 2 out to tie
the game, hr bottom of the 11th with 1 out also to tie the game)
couldn't save this one for the Jays.
11-May -- Chicago White Sox (at Toronto) W 5-2
Despite trailing 2-0 early, the Jays rallied for the win, thanks to
Glenallen Hill's 2-run homer, Dave Steib's 4th win (now 4-2 on the
season) and Duane Ward's 10th save (8th in last 8 tries).
12-May -- Chicago White Sox (at Toronto) W 4-2
A 3-run 2nd inning was all the Jays really needed, ably assisted by
Jimmy Key's win (now 5-2 this season), and -- you've guessed it! --
Duane Ward's 11th save.
Update
------
The Jays are handily placed to challenge Boston, despite the fact that they
have been without three of their star players -- Kelly Gruber, Tom Henke
and Ken Dayley. Henke has started his recovery in Dunedin AAA, Gruber
should be fit within a week, and Dayley hopes to play in an exhibition game
in Ottawa on Thursday. Expect the Jays to play even better when these
three return!

| 13-May -- Kansas City Royals (at Toronto) W 4-2
Todd Stottlemyre kept his hot streak going, pitching a 6-hitter
over 8 1/3 innings to register his 5th straight win of the season;
Duane Ward, of course, got his 12th save!
14-May -- Kansas City Royals (at Toronto) W 4-1
Greg Myers' 2-run homer, David Wells' 4th victory (now 4-3 for the
season) and a first major league save to rookie Mike Timlin sealed
another fine win for the Jays.
15-May -- Kansas City Royals (at Toronto) L 4-6
Jays rookie pitcher, Denis Boucher, is still looking for his first
major league win, but the main damage was caused by a 3-run homer
off Bob McDonald in the 8th inning. A late rally by the Jays (1
run in the 8th, 2 runs in the 9th) just came up short.
17-May -- Chicago White Sox (at Chicago) L 3-5
Not one of the Jays' better games this season as they struggled to
get their bats working. Mike Timlin took the loss with 4 walks in
2/3 of an inning.
18-May -- Chicago White Sox (at Chicago) W 9-2
The Jays matched their season high runs total in a game as rookie
Ed Sprague hit his first major league home run. Jimmy Key improved
his record to 6-2.
19-May -- Chicago White Sox (at Chicago) L 4-5
A wild game at Comiskey Park! After a home run from John Olerud,
Mark Whiten was hit by a pitch from starter Jack McDowell. Whiten
charged the mound and laid a Mike Tyson style hook to McDowell's
head; both teams invaded the pitch! Whiten and McDowell were
ejected from the game. When the game restarted, Jays could not
hold on to their lead, and Mike Timlin again took the loss.
Update
------
The Jays must be glad to get out of Chicago this week! The punch up
between Whiten and McDowell was bad enough (Whiten will probably get a
suspension in the near future), but both catchers suffered during the last
game. Greg Myers injured two of his fingers when attempting to take a
ball, and Pat Borders was unceremoniously knocked over by Robin Ventura
later in the game -- fortunately Borders managed to hold on to the ball and
make the out. Myers will be back for the series against Oakland, and
Borders will also be available as he only suffered some cuts and minor
concussion. More good news is that Tom Henke is back, and pitched an
inning in Saturday's game with no ill effects. We still await the return
of Kelly Gruber; the power of his bat is much needed. Also on the
sidelines are Manny Lee (sore ribs) and Rance Mulliniks.

| Jays take two of three in Oakland, but Boston sweeps, so the Jays are
one game back. Both teams are playing around .600 ball, while the rest
of the division is below .500. Stieb and Ward combined on a
five-hitter, but a bad call in the first inning allowed the winning run
in the 2-1 loss. Oakland had two hits after the first. Joe 'Mr. RBI'
Carter drove in the only run.

| 20-May -- Oakland Athletics (at Oakland) W 1-0
A superbly pitched game, and probably Jays' best game of the year.
David Wells shut the A's down on 2 hits over 7 innings, Duane Ward
and Tom Henke pitched 1 inning each (the save for Henke). Bob
Welch can feel a bit unlucky for Oakland, pitching a complete game
4-hitter, but still losing.
21-May -- Oakland Athletics (at Oakland) W 11-7
At last the Jays' fifth starter won a game this season! Jim Acker
(taking over from Denis Boucher) went 5 innings for the win, and
the Jays' bats had their most productive outing of the season --
the biggest hit of the night being Greg Myers' 3-run double in a
6-run 4th inning.
22-May -- Oakland Athletics (at Oakland) L 1-2
Another tightly pitched ball game, Dave Stieb unluckily taking the
loss on a dubious call in the first inning that cost the Jays a
double play. Stieb struck out a season high 8 batters.
24-May -- California Angels (at California) W 3-2
Jays left this one late. Trailing 0-2 in the top of the 8th, they
rallied for 3 runs, the winning run coming on a bases-loaded walk
to Pat Tabler. Mike Timlin (4-2 for the season) got the win.
25-May -- California Angels (at California) L 0-5
Jays had the misfortune to come up against Kirk McCaskill at his
best. He shut the Jays down on 4 hits over 7 innings, and never
looked in trouble. Todd Stottlemyre took his first loss of the
season (now 5-1).
26-May -- California Angels (at California) L 2-6
The Angels scored early and often, leading 5-0 after 3 innings,
then coasted home for an easy win. Jays' only real chance to get
to starter Mark Langston was in the 4th when Manuel Lee grounded
out with the bases loaded.
Update
------
The Jays now return home after a 9-game road-trip, with a 4-5 record. Not
as good as they would have liked, but they were helped by Boston's similar
record last week, and the Jays are still very much in contention. Injuries
continue to plague the Jays, but Tom Henke and Ken Dayley are back now,
with Kelly Gruber now on a day-to-day basis. When all their injuries are
cleared up, Jays should be looking to put some distance between themselves
and Boston at the top of the A. L. East.

| 28-May -- Oakland Athletics (at Toronto) L 4-8
A dubious umpiring call in the third inning robbed Jays of a double
play -- and Jose Canseco then hit a 3-run homer. Although the Jays
fought back, they were unable to recover from this and dropped
their third straight loss to fall one game back of Boston. A
baseball record crowd of 50,299 was at the SkyDome for this game.
29-May -- Oakland Athletics (at Toronto) W 8-3
Another 50,000+ crowd took the season's attendance at the SkyDome
over 1 million in only the 22nd game of the year. A tremendous
game -- 25 hits, 14 to the Jays. The Jays trailed 1-3 in the 4th
inning, then Joe Carter hit a 2-run homer to tie the score, and
Jays never trailed again. Jimmy Key got the win (now 7-2), and Tom
Henke got his 5th save.
30-May -- Oakland Athletics (at Toronto) L 6-8
Another sell-out crowd (in fact, the next game for which tickets
are available isn't until June 28!) saw a fine see-saw game, with
the lead changing hands several times. Mookie Wilson hit a monster
3-run homer to give the Jays the lead 4-3, then they extended the
lead to 6-4, but a bases-loaded walk by Duane Ward gave Oakland the
lead in the 8th, and they never looked back.
31-May -- California Angels (at Toronto) W 5-1
A fine game from David Wells -- his first career complete game, and
he also matched a career high 9 strike-outs. Wells is now 6-4 for
the season, 5-1 for May. Devon White hit his first home run for
the Jays, ironically against his old team mates!
1-Jun -- California Angels (at Toronto) L 8-11
Not a pretty game to watch, unless you like plenty of runs and hits
-- Jays got 16 of those hits, but 3 errors, and a grand-slam home
run given up by former Angel, Willie Frazer, to Dave Winfield, were
the main factors in the Jays' loss. Home runs to Joe Carter and
John Olerud.
2-Jun -- California Angels (at Toronto) L 2-7
Dave Winfield was the thorn in the Jays' side again, hitting a
3-run homer off loser Jim Acker who, apart from that, pitched
quite well. Joe Carter, whose bat seems to be coming alive again,
hit his 8th home run of the season.
Update
------
First the bad news! Kelly Gruber is still on the DL, and could be for
another month. Dave Stieb also went on the DL, for the first time in his
career, with tendinitis in his shoulder. Jays desperately need these two
all-star players back.
Now, the good news! The attendances for the 6 home games against Oakland
and California totaled 301,660 -- for the Oakland games the crowds were
50,299, 50,262 and 50,271; for the California games the crowds were 50,252,
50,255 and 50,261. And, the even better news is that, although the Jays
are only 6-9 for their last 15 games, Boston is playing just as badly, so
the Jays are still tied for the lead in the A. L. East.

| 3-Jun -- New York Yankees (at New York) W 5-3
A looong game, thanks to a 2-hour rain delay in the 6th inning.
But this didn't affect the Jays, who won their first meeting of the
season against the Yankees aided by home runs for Mookie Wilson and
Joe Carter (his 3rd in three games), Jimmy Key's victory (now 8-2)
and Tom Henke's 6th save.
4-Jun -- New York Yankees (at New York) L 3-5
Bottom of the 4th, Jays were cruising along, leading 3-0, with Todd
Stottlemyre pitching a perfect game, having retired 11 straight.
Then the roof fell in!! Don Mattingley hit a long home run, and
the Yankees kept picking away at the lead and, finally, won it with
ease. Stottlemyre (now 5-2) took the loss.
5-Jun -- New York Yankees (at New York) W 4-1
With Boston losing again, this was a BIG win, stretching the Jays'
lead atop the A. L. East to 1 games. David Wells overcame a shaky
start to run his record to 7-4, Glenallen Hill hit a home run, and
Tom Henke picked up his 7th save.
6-Jun -- Baltimore Orioles (at Baltimore) L 4-6
The fifth starter problem struck the Jays again. Jays enjoyed
early 2-0 and 4-2 leads, but the Orioles knocked out starter Jim
Acker with a bat-around, 4-run 5th inning and that was enough to
earn them the win.
7-Jun -- Baltimore Orioles (at Baltimore) L 4-6
Once again the Jays enjoyed an early 2-run lead, but allowed
Baltimore to get back in the game, giving the loss to Juan Guzman
(pitching in place of Dave Stieb -- tendinitis) How much longer
can Jays keep going with such shaky back-up pitching?
8-Jun -- Baltimore Orioles (at Baltimore) W 8-4
This game was tied 2-2 going into the 8th inning, but a 6-run 8th,
during which Jays sent 11 men to the plate, gave them a much
needed, if somewhat flattering, win. Jimmy Key ran his record to
an amazing 9-2 for the season -- he must be a certainty for the
All-Star Game. Roberto Alomar tied a Blue Jays record in this
game by stealing 4 bases.
9-Jun -- Baltimore Orioles (at Baltimore) W 3-2
Another fine pitching performance from Todd Stottlemyre, going 7
innings, giving up only 3 hits to run his record to 6-2. Duane
Ward almost blew the game in the 9th, so Tom Henke came on to
record the last out and his 8th straight save.
Update
------
The Jays are really starting to hurt, especially in the pitching area.
Dave Stieb is out for at least one more start, and Jays will now try middle
reliever Mike Timlin for the up-coming series at Cleveland. There are
several trade rumours flying around, one concerning Cleveland's Greg
Swindell; but it depends what Jays have to give up to get him -- one rumour
has Tom Henke leaving the Jays!!
On a brighter note, despite their losses to Baltimore, Jays now hold a 1
game lead over Boston -- it's interesting to note, however, that if the
Jays were in the A. L. West, they would only be in 5th place!

| 11-Jun -- Cleveland Indians (at Cleveland) L 1-2 (12 innings)
A superbly pitched ball-game between David Wells and Greg Swindell.
The Jays scored their run in the 3rd, then Wells kept the Indians
at bay until the bottom of the 8th. Duane Ward, Jim Acker and Ken
Dayley lived dangerously until the 12th inning, when Dayley loaded
the bases, and then hit a batter to drive in the winning run.
12-Jun -- Cleveland Indians (at Cleveland) W 1-0
Have the Jays solved their fifth starter problem? Rookie Mike
Timlin pitched an excellent game, limiting the Indians to 1 hit
over 6 innings; Tom Henke picked up his 9th save. But the best
news of the game was the return of Kelly Gruber at third base.
13-Jun -- Cleveland Indians (at Cleveland) W 1-0
Jimmy Key pitched probably his best game of the season to take his
record to 10-2. He retired the first seven batters he faced, then
gave up back-to-back singles in the 3rd inning, then retired the
last 20 batters in order -- no hit batsmen, no walks, no errors.
Key's control this season is awesome; he was always ahead of the
batter, and never looked in any sort of trouble.
14-Jun -- Baltimore Orioles (at Toronto) W 9-1
Jays scored early in this game, leading 7-0 after 4 innings. Todd
Stottlemyre scattered 8 hits through 8 innings for the win (now 7-2
for the season). Kelly Gruber had 3 hits including a homer, John
Olerud snapped out of his slump with 3 hits, a double a triple and
a home run.
15-Jun -- Baltimore Orioles (at Toronto) L 4-8
Juan Guzman walked 4 batters, 3 of which came home to score, and
this wildness was a main contributor to the Jays' loss. They
rallied from a 1-5 deficit to 4-5 on Joe Carter's 11th homer of the
season, but a 3-run homer by Devereaux in the 6th inning sealed the
win for Baltimore.
16-Jun -- Baltimore Orioles (at Toronto) L 8-13
Not a pretty game! Jays opened a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning, then
David Wells got ejected for arguing a call. Baltimore leaped out
to a 7-3 lead, Jays tied it at 8-8, but then Duane Ward gave up a
grand slam in the 7th to Joe Orsulak to shatter Jays' hopes.
Update
------
The Jays just can't get a decent win streak going -- if they'd been able to
put 5 or 6 wins together a couple of times, they would be well out in
front. The only consolation is that Boston is playing just as badly. Good
news about Dave Stieb's shoulder (tendinitis) is that it's much better --
bad news is that he now has a bad back!! Jays continue their search for a
fifth starter, but I feel what they really need is some good middle order
relief; Acker, Dayley and Fraser have been sadly lacking when they come on
to pitch.

| 18-Jun -- New York Yankees (at Toronto) L 2-4 (Attendance 50,271)
A shaky game for Mike Timlin, sending his record to 5-4 for the
year. But Jays did themselves no favours by having three men
picked off base. The Jays trailed 0-3 after 2 innings, pulled
back to 2-3, but just couldn't catch the Yankees.
19-Jun -- New York Yankees (at Toronto) L 0-3 (Attendance 50,281)
This was the 4th straight loss for the Jays; thankfully, Boston is
playing just as badly! This game was tied 0-0 going into the 8th
inning, but a 2-run homer to ex-Blue Jay Jesse Barfield did the
damage as Jimmy Key gave up 3 runs to take the loss, and run his
season record to 10-3.
20-Jun -- New York Yankees (at Toronto) W 6-1 (Attendance 50,256)
Todd Stottlemyre was shaky early on (4 hits in the first 2
innings), but he steadied up nicely and gave up only 8 hits in
total to take the win, his 8th of the season. But the real hero
was Joe Carter who hit two long solo homers to raise his batting
average to .301.
21-Jun -- Cleveland Indians (at Toronto) W 8-4 (Attendance 50,283)
Not a pretty game to watch! In the first inning Jays committed 3
errors, but only conceded 1 run. Jays took a 4-1 lead bottom of
the first, then let Cleveland get back into the game 4-4. But Joe
Carter and Ed Sprague both hit 2-run homers to give Jays the win.
David Wells (8-4) got the win, Tom Henke his 10th save.
22-Jun -- Cleveland Indians (at Toronto) W 4-0 (Attendance 50,285)
A fine game pitched by rookie Juan Guzman, much more control than
his previous 2 outings. He gave up 3 hits over 7 innings for his
first major league win, backed up by Duane Ward for his 13th save.
Joe Carter hit another homer, his 4th in 3 games.
23-Jun -- Cleveland Indians (at Toronto) W 3-1 (Attendance 50,275)
Stop me if you've heard this before, but -- Joe Carter homered
again! His league leading 17th of the year, tying George Bell's
club records of 11 homers in a month, and homers in 4 consecutive
games. Mike Timlin pitched well, but the win went to rookie Bob
McDonald -- his first in the majors. Tom Henke picked up his 11th
save in 11 attempts.
24-Jun -- Cleveland Indians (at Toronto) W 4-3 (Attendance 50,263)
Jays went ahead early, 3-0 in the 3rd, but allowed the Indians to
get back to tie it 3-3 in the 6th. Pat Tabler's sac fly in the 7th
won it for the Jays, the win going to Duane Ward (now 1-3) and, of
course, Tom Henke picked up his 12th save. Joe Carter failed to
hit a homer, but he did get a double and a sac fly.
Update
------
Not surprisingly, Joe Carter won the A. L. Player of the Week award this
week. He hit .409 (9 for 22) with 5 homers, 2 doubles and 7 rbi's. At
last the Jays seem to be playing better, with a 5-game win streak, and a
4-game sweep of the Indians. Kelly Gruber is back, and starting to hit the
ball well, but Dave Stieb is out until after the All-Star break. And, to
cap it all, the Jays still sell out game after game -- the average
attendance for this 7-game home stand was just over 50,273! Maybe they
still have a shot at topping 4 million at home this year.

| 25-Jun -- Minnesota Twins (at Minnesota) L 6-8
Quite a see-saw game. Twins took an early 4-0 lead, but the Jays
hit back with 5 runs in the 4th inning, including back-to-back
homers by Kelly Gruber and John Olerud. But the Twins retook the
lead on Mike Pagliarulo's 2-run homer, and went on to record their
11th consecutive home victory. Todd Stottlemyre took the loss (now
8-3).
26-Jun -- Minnesota Twins (at Minnesota) W 5-2
Another great pitching performance by David Wells, giving up only a
2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th, to go to 9-4 for the year.
Tom Henke picked up his 13th save in 13 attempts -- this guy is
awesome this year! Devon White went 3 for 5, Joe Carter 4 for 5.
27-Jun -- Minnesota Twins (at Minnesota) W 1-0
Juan Guzman really looks like he may be the Jays' fifth starter,
going 7 2/3 innings and giving up just 3 hits for his second win of
the year. Tom Henke, of course, got save #14. Jays took the
series 2-1 from the Twins, which was no mean feat as Minnesota had
won 20 of their previous 22 games coming into this series.
28-Jun -- Seattle Mariners (at Toronto) L 1-3 (Attendance 50,000+)
Tom Candiotti pitched his first game as a Blue Jay. A shaky start
(he gave up 2 runs in the first inning), but he eventually settled
down and looks like a good acquisition, despite taking the loss.
29-Jun -- Seattle Mariners (at Toronto) W 4-0 (Attendance 50,000+)
Jimmy Key got the win (now 10-3). Sorry, no other information
available (I was on vacation).
30-Jun -- Seattle Mariners (at Toronto) W 6-1 (Attendance 50,000+)
Todd Stottlemyre was one out away from his first major league
complete game shut-out, but still got the win to go 9-3 for the
season.
1-Jul -- Seattle Mariners (at Toronto) W 4-3 (Attendance 50,000+)
A wild win for the Jays. They trailed 1-3 bottom of the 9th, but a
2-run double from Roberto Alomar tied the game. Seattle
intentionally loaded the bases. An infield hit should have
resulted in the force-out at home plate, but the catcher lifted his
foot off the plate too soon, and the winning run scored.
2-Jul -- Minnesota Twins (at Toronto) W 4-3 (Attendance 48,676)
Another come-from-behind win. Jays trailed 1-3 after 6 innings,
but scored once each in the bottom of the 7th, 8th and 9th innings
to win. Duane Ward got the win (now 2-3 for the season).
3-Jul -- Minnesota Twins (at Toronto) W 4-0 (Attendance 50,071)
Tom Candiotti got his first win as a Blue Jay (the first of many,
we hope!) as the Jays played long-ball. Homers to Joe Carter (2)
and Devon White in the first four innings were all the Jays needed.
4-Jul -- Minnesota Twins (at Toronto) L 0-1 (Attendance 50,293)
A strong pitching duel between Jimmy Key (who took the loss to go
10-4 for the season) and David West who shut the Jays down on just
3 hits.
5-Jul -- Seattle Mariners (at Seattle) W 2-1
Todd Stottlemyre, despite 6 2/3 innings of 6-hit pitching, failed
to get the win, but he was well supported by Bob McDonald (win #2)
and Tom Henke (save #15 in 15 attempts).
6-Jul -- Seattle Mariners (at Seattle) W 4-3 (10 innings)
A game full of errors -- Jays scored two runs on a double error
early in the game. Jays trailed (again!) 2-3 going into the ninth,
but tied it to send the game into extra innings. John Olerud won
the game with a solo homer in the top of the tenth. Mike Timlin
picked up his 7th win of the season (against 4 losses) and "Mr.
Perfect" (Tom Henke) got save #16.
7-Jul -- Seattle Mariners (at Seattle) W 5-2
Jays tied up their last game before the All-Star break early,
scoring all their runs in the first two innings, including a
bat-around 4 run second inning (highlighted by John Olerud's
monster 2-run homer). Juan Guzman got his third win with a strong
8 innings, giving up just 3 hits and one run.
Update
------
The BIG news of these two weeks was the Jays' second block-buster trade of
the season. They sent Mark Whiten, Glenallen Hill, Denis Boucher and a
fourth player to be named later to Cleveland for ace knuckle-ball pitcher
Tom Candiotti and a minor-league outfielder. Quite a gamble for the Jays,
but, for once, it looks like they're trading for the chance to win the
World Series, especially as they are burning up the A. L. East, with a 5
game lead over Boston at the All-Star break.

I wish now, that I stuck to my original intention of visiting my Dad
in Germany next week. I could have watched some of the games on
CFTV Lahr. (Well they are recordings, and a day late, but even that is
better than I could get here in the U.K., unless I bought a Satellite
