Wonder what division they will be in. Maybe we can have an all Canadian

though.

| |
During the early part of the century and until 1933, Ottawa had a
National Hockey League team known as the Senators. They won six
    Stanley cups during their lifetime.

When the NHL announced they were going to expand a group of local
businessmen began a 'Return the Senators' campaign and succeeded in
getting one of the franchises for the 92-93 season. They now have to
build an arena and get a team.

It's been a very emotional time in the city while this has been going
    on.

| |
Now that the team has to be organized I have heard that they are
considering drafting some of the real (term used loosely) senators
    because:

They are great on defence.......nothing gets by them

They can skate around any issue

They are used to being in overtime

They are used to spending a lot of time on the benches

Any more reasons to draft them?

They wouldn't mistake a loon for a hockey puck?
They're proficient at sticking it to others?
They prefer Molson over Canadian Club?
The Canadian Reserves could use a few good men for SA?

I heard the reason they did not give Hamilton a franchise was
that if they did, then Toronto would want one too. :-)
...and other rumours are that Gretzky will be playing for
	the Senators...

| | How do you think the Canadiens will look at the Senateurs, and what
about the Olympiques (i guess that is their name) from Hull?

I could imagine that the Canadien's reaction is twofold:
Looking forward towards a great rivalry (maybe like the one with the
Nordiques), but also feeling a stronger competition for local talent
and fan support. I have the impression that there are many Canadiens
supporters in Kanata. How will they react?

Can the Olympiques survive (like Laval, Verdun and Longueuil (sp?) do
    in the Montral area)?

Personally, i'm glad to see that Ottawa got one (as i would have been
    for Hamilton).

One thing scares me a bit, though, about this whole expansion thing,
and that is the inevitable 'thinning effect' in terms of available
talent. The NHL will 'suck' more and more on the european talent pool.
For not too few of those young guys that is no good. Not to speak about
the 'leftovers' over here. The CSFR hockey league is bought out already
    to a great extend.

In that sense i favour places like Ottawa or Hamilton or Milwaukee
to get one, since those are regions who supply talent as well, not
only consume them, like LA, Tampa and similar environments do.

Let alone, of course, my personal preference for Canada (and Qubec in
particular - so i'm p*ssed, Q. did not get another one).

I'm not sure what you know of the NHL drafting procedure, but an Ottawa
team would have no greater claim on 'local' talent than Los Angeles
does. Of course, you like to get local heroes, but it's not like the
days of old when Montreal automatically got first chance at the
abundant talent in the province of Quebec.

| | -1: You are right, although, if i look at the canadiens team of today,
the laws of drafting-mathematics seem to be somewhat violated.

I have read and heared - and i find it logical and natural - that
they draft qubecois players over others, IF they have the choice
between compareable talent. The Nordiques are said to have this
tendency, too (again, consequently in my view). So, there is a
(secondary) 'local' aspect to the draft system, augmented by the
'natural' tendency of some players to stay at home/come back home.

Now, since Ottawa is on the very border-line and has a big 'back-
yard' in Qubec, the above might become true in this case as well.

That is what i meant by competition for 'local' talent.

One of today's top sports stories today was the "investigation" of the
