383.0. "looking for some general info" by BROKE::SMITH_D () Wed Dec 05 1990 09:40

*****Looking for information on how to get information****

Does anyone know how one would go about finding information
about, marriage licenses, birth records and land deeds in Ottawa
   or cities near Ottawa

Is this information public to all? Can this information be obtained
over the phone, or does one have to go to Ottawa (or local towns)
to find this information? If this information can be obtained over
the phone could someone give me the telephone numbers of the local
   town hall in Ottawa?

any and all information would be greatly appreciated

     Thank you dot....

Birth records for Ontario towns and cities are held by the Office of
the Registrar General in Toronto. They do charge a fee for doing a
search ... I don't have a direct phone number, but you should be
able to get a number for them from 613-566-2721 (an Ottawa local access
number). Marriage records are probably also held by them too.

Land deeds are held by one of two offices ...

    Land Registry or Land Titles

(usually, and fortunately, in the same office) The two systems for
registering title to land is a hang-over from days of yore. Usually,
titles are registered on a Municipality of County basis. Ottawa
and its suburbs are in the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton,
with registry office at 161 Elgin ph #613-239-1319 and titles at
239-1230. Fees are usually charged and the search information must
    usually be specific.
