| Keith,
Are you talking non-stop or reasonable number of stops? I believe
that you have the option of stopping along the route and take the
next train. Check with either the Canadian counsalate or your
travel agent. Average train ride from Vancouver to Toronto to
Montreal is about 4 days (when I went to the Montreal World's
Fair).

| I suppose I would mean 'reasonable number of stops' - ie, maybe 1 overnighter
somewhere near the Rockies.

| The trip takes 3.5 days and 4 nights.
Trains leave Montral Tu/Th/Sa at 5:00 PM, with a change in T.O. (one hour
layover), arrival in Vancouver is the fourth morning at 8:25 A.M.
In January, the one-way fare, incl sleeper, is C$596. But if you buy a
Canada-wide travel pass ($339) plus accom $199/each way, you only pay $538
one-way and $737 round-trip.
You can break your trip as often as you want, but this will slightly increase
the cost of the accomodation, since you won't be using a through berth (except
for a break in T.O.)
I know the following number for VIA Rail does Keith no good in France, but
I provide it for callers in the U.S.: 800 361-3677 (There are different
800 numbers in Canada for the different provinces which you can get from
800 555-1212.)

| Why not cruise through Canada on the Grand Canal?
This would be far more interesting than taking the train!

| That's an excellent idea, Glenn. I would also recommend taking
a cruise across Canada on the Grand Canal, in this way you would
completely circumnavigate around Alberta, which is only filled
with Albertans anyway. Apparently, most of the electrical water
heaters have been switched on for the winter season along the
entire length of the Canal so you shouldn't encounter any ice.

| I don't know about train links, but I've heard that on the HMCS Lump
they serve some pretty good sausage links. Korff Barbunk says that they
water down the drinks on the canal cruises so be warned.
Pat, in the more northern routes of the Grand Canal i understand that
they have to use salt boats despite the water heaters.

367.8 | Fares are up quite a bit since November. | COVERT::COVERT | John R. Covert | Mon Mar 11 1991 13:29 | 38 |
| I decided to do this (eastbound only) sometime this summer.
The schedule and cost are as follows:
Thursday (Day 0)
Train 2 Vancouver to Toronto 9:30p 7:30a+4 (Monday)
Friday - (Day 1)
Kamloops 6:20a Jasper 4:20p Edmonton 11:00p
Saturday - (Day 2)
Saskatoon 6:30a Winnipeg 6:00p
Sunday - (Day 3)
Sioux Lookout 2:35a Hornepayne 1:55p Sudbury Junction 11:59p
Monday - (Day 4)
Train 2 arrives T.O. 7:30a
LHT Train Toronto Montreal-Dorval 11:10a 4:09p
DL 599 YUL BOS 6:30p 7:42p
VIA Rail: C$397x2+608+34x2 = C$1470 (approx .87, US$1280)
The $397 is a one-way fare; remember that the Canada Rail Pass is only $2 more,
allowing unlimited travel. The 7% GST waived if your travel agent writes the
ticket with a same day international connection into Canada. The 608 is the
price for a bedroom; the 34 is for Club on the LHT from T.O. to Dorval.
I'm still trying to get space on the California Zephyr westbound
($316x2+764+348 = $1744), but it is completely sold out for most of the
summer. On U.S. trains, accomodation prices include meals; the 764 is
Chicago to SFO; the 348 is Boston to Chicago, and the 316 is, of course,
the one-way fare.
