Greetings ! Danny Ryan here in downtown Dublin,Ireland... I have a question regarding things musical in Toronto ... A good friend of mine is travelling to Toronto at the end of the week . He is a live music fanatic ( having played (vocals) with a local band in Dublin). That's music as in LOUD. Anyway he asked , so I thought I'd inquire here if anybody had any info on the live music scene in Toronto - what/where are the best venues , anny big gigs coming up ,which publications list whats on in this field ..etc etc He is flying out on Friday 31st for 3 weeks Any information would be great.. Hope this is the right place to ask sln Danny

Tell your friend to get a copy of "Now" or "Metropolis". Those are free and publish complete listing of the various events in town including who's performing where (for live music, check: "Clubs"). | |||||

At this time of year, Toronto has a number of exciting live music venues: 1. 'Caribana' - a wild week of Caribbean reggae, food, limbo dancing and mirth which begins with a fantastically colourful parade down University Avenue and a ferry ride to Centre Island for steel band concerts, floating nightclubs, etc. The island throbs with loud music. Takes place on Labour Day week (1-9 Sept.), call 925-5435 for information. 2. The Canadian National Exhibition, the world's largest annual exhibition. Big rock-stars at the grandstand in exhibition park. 3. The following are 'not-to-be-missed': a) Chick n' Deli, 744 Mount Pleasant Road, 489-3363 - renowned for great jazz. b) The Bluenote, Pears Avenue - probably the best rhythm and blues. c) El Macambo, 464 Spadina Avenue, 925-4830 - ROCK N' ROLL, dude!!
