| Seriously though, two destroyers and a support ship are being sent.
However, they are to have new equipment fitted before they leave,
so they won't reach the Gulf until September.

| The Persephone is the name of a what might best be described as a
fishing scow used in a Canadian TV series called "The Beachcombers"
which after nearly 19 years has at last come to the end of its road.
Persephone ... pronounced Purr-Seff-uh-knee.

P.S. I don't know how the math works (like 40% of 7.5 ships is
3), but this is what the Ottawa Citizen said.

| In response to news that the U.S. is sending their "Stealth Bomber"
to the Persian Gulf, Canada has announced that we will be bolstering
our involvement with OUR leading edge in technology, the "Stealth
Canoe".
It not only provides protection from Radar and Sonar, but also the
dreaded Beaver detection systems. Rumour has it that is uses
non-recyclable Snow Bags (see note 107.*), and comes equipped with
eight (8) Mohawk warriors fresh from training at the secret Canadian
Forces base at Oka.
It's no wonder that Hussein is trying to stabilize his Eastern border
by making peace with Iran, once he heard that the Canadian S-C was
on its way (should reach the Gulf by mid-December, given calm seas).

| I have just returned from a visit to my Father on the Canadian Forces
Base somewhere in Europe. The squadron that Canada is sending to the
Gulf is currently based there, and some of my Dad's friends had just
gone over there to try to find a base from which to operate.
The Jets that are going over were being put through their paces, and
jeez, are they noisy ! We were playing Golf next to the base there, and
they were practicing touch and goes. My ear drums will never be the
same again.
The atmosphere on the base was definately more subdued than other
years, and I had the feeling that everyone was hoping for some new
peace initiative, but most people I spoke with was ready to do whatever
was necessary. A lot of people seemed to be worried about losing
Canada's 'Peace Keeper' Tag.

| Actually, that's CFB Baden-Sollingen. Baden-Baden is the spa town about
20 klicks east. The squadron is 409 (Nighthawk) though there will be a
smattering of jocks from other squadrons (one fella I went to flight
school with, and a former instructor of mine from 439 (Tiger) and
441 (Silver Fox) Squadrons are among those now in the Gulf).

Scooter, do you know Baden-Sollingen ? Or Lahr ? Being ex 439, perhaps
you served a posting there ?
In the local Canadian Newpaper there, 'Der Kanadier', they claimed that
it was mainly the 439 (F118 s ?) going there.
A friend of my Fathers was supposed to go back to Canada to take part
in an inter service Golf tournament, and then have a weeks holiday in
Spain (Maybe I should join up ! 8^) ), but it was all cancelled,
because he was supposed to fly out to the Gulf to check over possible
locations. Well, he kept getting held up, because it hadn't been
decided exactly where the Canucks were going, and in the end, they sent
someone else. I think he was happy about it, ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-).
Regards,
Wayne.

| Scooter! What a small world. I remember Baden when it was called '4 Wing'.
My father was stationed in Metz, France ( 1 Air Div. HQ) and I would play
football against the high school teams from 1 Wing (Marville, France), 2 Wing
(Grostenquin, France), 3 Wing (Zweibrcken, Germany) and 4 Wing. Of course,
those were the days of the Sabre and CF100!
Did you ever know a Captain John Shaw? He flew with the Snowbirds but was
killed in a CF104 on a familiarization flight near Baden. We went to high
school together in Metz, and ROS at RCAF Stn. Centralia (he a pilot, me for
radio-navigation).

Ah yes, the Air Div Daze ! (open another can of Sabres)
You know, we still called Baden "4 Wing" in a nostalgic sorta way even
back in the late 70's early 80's. Now of course there's only the 1st
Canadian Air Group (no loger a Division) with 3 squadrons with no
"wings" (the organizational kind).
In my time it was 439, 441 & 429. And 444 but they'rw choppers and therefore
don;t count.
Zweibrucken is a USAF base now, and the only one with an Ice Hockey
Arena. (All Canadian bases have hockey rinks in Europe - at one
time they said that if you eliminated all the Canadian military
built rinks, you would reduce the number of rinks in all of Europe by
50% !!)
Yeah I know Lahr & Baden-Sollingen well. used to live in a dachwonung
in the sprawling metropolis of Hugelsheim outside the main gate at
Baden and also in an apartment in the wandering village of
Kippenheimweiler which used to be under (literally) the approach
to runway 03 at CFB Lahr but got moved by NATO to a spot about 10 km
south.

| 'Gunnel' has nothing to do with a part of the Stealth Canoe. These guys
were engaged in a well known Canadian Navy activity, fish-squashing.
The particular fish that they happened to choose in the Gulf was the gunnel,
a small eel-shaped sea-fish. By jumping up and down on the fish, the Navy
hopes to relieve pent-up tensions and provide the evening meal.
