290.1 | Not enough time available to make that Boston Flight. | KAOM25::TOMKINS | This MIND left BLANK INTENTIONALLY | Wed May 02 1990 13:23 | 31 |
| Call AMEX and change your intinerary.
One airport is called DORVAL and the other is called MIRABEL.
It's about one hour between the airports.
Last I heard you had a choice of TAXI (you pay) or BUS (you pay)
and both are rather expensive.
It would seem that you wish to go from PARIS to BOSTON.
If you land at MIRABEL (quite likely) you will have to go through
Canadian customs and immigration (got a VISA for CANADA) and then
when you get to DORVAL, you will go through a pre-US customs and
immigration (got a VISA for the US).
Given that you have two hours between flights, I'd say that you
miss your connecting flight from DORVAL to BOSTON by a half hour.
Clearing Canada customs and immigration will take about 45 minutes
at the outside, the drive to DORVAL about 1 hour, clearing airport
security, checking baggage, getting boarding pass about 30 minutes
and clearing US customs and immigration about 30 minutes.
I'd say that the flight to BOSTON leaves about 45 minutes before
you could catch it.
Best regards, Richard.
P.S. If anyone would like to refute (correct) me on the above please
do.

If anyone refutes you, they are foolish. Two hours would not be enough,
even with a helicopter.
Use one of Air France's or TWA's non-stop flights from Paris to Boston.

thank you much for saving me from a possible 2 day trip
back home...
i've changed my itinerary, but i still wonder why there are
no boston flights from the airport i would land in, i checked
minitel and all air france flights from paris land in one
airport, and all delta or air-canada flights to boston leave
from the other...
during the week there arent many non-twa flights direct paris-boston
it would be a nice alternative to stop in montreal rather than
jfk
is this just a customs problem?? just curious...
merci bien

Basicallydomestic and U.S. flights use Dorval.
International flights (other than U.S. destinations) use Mirabel.
Until recently a similar partition of flights occurred at Glasgow,
Scotland, where domestic and European flights used Abbotsinch and
intercontinental flights used Prestwick.
In both cases a cynic might say that the local authorities bullied
the intercontinental carriers into using an airport that would
otherwise have been a white elephant.

290.5 | It's really quite silly, actually. | KAOM25::TOMKINS | This MIND left BLANK INTENTIONALLY | Fri May 04 1990 09:54 | 8 |
| The last reply is quite accurate.
Mirabel has been billed as the white elephant of the century.
Mirabel is International and Dorval is Domestic. It's a very, very
silly situation.

| According to my brother, an IFR controller at Montral Centre,
the idea that Mirabel is a white elephant no longer holds water. If it
wasn't for Mirabel now, Dorval would be absolutely swamped and would
require much expansion in order to accommodate the vastly increased
volume of traffic.
My brother also estimates that the volume of air traffic that he
controls has increases 25% per annum over the last 5 years. There is no
longer any such thing as an easy shift for a controller who has a busy
sector, even at night. Montral Centre is a very busy place, especially
with the MUC's west portion of the Grand Canal going in right beside
the centre between Hymus and Des Sources. The blasting has caused the
radar tracking system to go off line for upwards of 2 to 3 days at which
time the controllers have to go onto the roof of the building and yell
instructions at the aircraft.
Really, I'm not making this up! 8-)

Hmmm. Yeah. AF seems to only fly CDG->BOS on Sunday and Thursday.
TWA flies every day. What's wrong with TWA? One airline is as bad
as another, and I've had no serious problems with TWA. Besides, they
paid off the terrorists...
And one airport is as bad as another, too. Unless you're planning on
visiting the city (in which case you don't have a problem), there's no
advantage of Montreal over JFK, and it would double the customs headache
even if there were flights to Boston from Mirabel.

As I read the recently promulgated memo on the subject of notes files,
I believe that company policies and procedures do not allow me to
answer that question here.
