| | You're right, this is a lot of driving. Niagara Falls is 2 hours from
Toronto, which is 6 hours from Montreal, which is 4 to 8 hours from
Maine, depending upon where you are. I've driven this many times....
I prefer going through the States (mountains etc.).

As far as going to Niagara Falls...there's a reason that nobody has
mentioned it here...it's very tacky. I would go for a day trip only,
and then only during the spring (when all the flowers are in bloom).
The Niagara area is also very nice to visit, especially Niagara-on-
    the-Lake. But for a longer trip....it's like John McEnroe...some
people love him, some people, well.....

| | There are a lot of horror museums in Niagara Falls. Never could
figure that one out. I would recommend you spend no more than 2
    hours there.

| 280.3 | Niagara is definitely worth visiting | TROA01::MSCHNEIDER |  | Tue Mar 20 1990 18:22 | 17 |
| | Admittedly downtown Niagara Falls is the worst of all tourist traps
and tacky to the extreme. However, it is possible to visit Niagara
Falls and avoid all of this. The parkland along the river is beautiful
and the Falls themselves quite a site (I've been there dozens of
times). Seeing them lit at night is also worth seeing.

Driving from Niagara Fall to Niagara-on-the-Lake is also recommended.
Take in the Shaw Festival (live theater) if you can (rush seats
go on sale at 10 am each morning ... at least on weekdays). Stop
in to see Brock's Monument at Queenston Heights. So spending a
whole day in Niagara Falls and surrounding area is not as bad as
    the previous replies have indicated.

As soon as we get a Grand Compiler built, and get the *%^%$ thing

|  |     As was mentioned;

    - Niagara-on-the-lake is a must
    - a drive along the parkway is also very nice
    - take a ride on the maid-of-the-mist (boat that goes very near
    to the falls)
    - can go under the falls, actually you pop out of a cave (kinda of
    neat)
    - check out the whirl pools further down the gorge
    - gotta stay in one of the hotels with sunken bathtubs, heart shaped
beds and mirrors on the ceiling :-)
    - go up the sky line tower
    - go the US side to really appreciate the Canadian side (like night
and day in regards to the cleanliness of the cities)
    - walk across the Peace bridge and scare the %#$* out of yourself
    - go the the Falls museum (has some containers in which some crazys
    went over the falls in)
    - why not tride riding the falls yourself just to say you did :-)

Have a good time at the Falls and be a tourist.
Alan (a Brock Grad, St. Catharines - 15 minutes from the falls)

The Welland Canal will be used for collector lanes once the Grand
Canal is completed. So in a sense they will be linked however in a
    parallel fashion.
One major concern is that the on and off ramps will be prone to
    grid-lock in rush hour.

| | Glenn is pulling your barge pole fellas. The Grand Canal is *NOT*
linked to the Welland Canal. It was deemed to be a source of congestion
if this were done, so the Grand Canal was built to pass *UNDER* the
Welland Canal. Typically, there isn't sufficient headroom so that most
tankers must have the upper decks removed in order to pass under the Welland
Canal. This massive project devastated the surrounding area to the extent
that Thorold had to be moved to Grimsby - Brock University had to be
relocated to north of Toronto, at Canada's Wonderland.

| | What is this Niagara-at-the-Falls (or whatever) that is mentioned in
previous notes? Also, any names of these places to stay with the
sunken tubs, etc? If we only stay overnight at the Falls, where
else should we go in Canada. Is Toronto or Montreal too hot in the
summer for a stay? I think a few days in either would be alright,
but we want more country and beautiful scenery. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks!

| | Niagara-on-the-Lake is where the Niagara river meets Lake Ontario.
The other end, at Lake Erie, is Buffalo and Fort Erie.

NOTL is really quaint, lots of flowers, golf courses, etc.

I would not recommend actually STAYING at one of the Niagara falls
hotels with the vibrating beds etc.

Visit Quebec City if you are going to Montreal...this is a definite
    must.

Canadas Wonderland is also a very nice place to be....lots to do
and the Canadian whether manages to make anything fab compared to
cold old England...(she says as it is 75 outside and still not too
warm - but the hottest day yet!)

    well...

| | Our favorite restaurant in the area is on the US side. The Clarkson
House is located in Lewiston NY (just north of Niagara Falls N.Y., along
the river). I think the biggest part of the charm of the place is that
it has not changed one bit since I was a wee one (except the prices).
It's a steak house in the style that was popular 30 odd years ago. The
only place I've ever been where customers actually ordered "real"
cocktails (martinis, manhattans, rob roys) when the waitress asks "Do
you wan't anything from the bar before dinner?"

We also often go to the Sushia Gardens on Canadian side. It's a teppan
style Japanese restaurant that is suprisingly good considering that it
is located in Maple Leaf Village (sort of an amusement park and tacky
shopping mall all in one, be sure to visit the Elvis Museam there if
    you go.
