261.0. "Liberal Leadership" by TRCO01::SANDHU (Database/OLTP Sales) Wed Jan 24 1990 11:43

They're off again: Shiela, Paul, and Jean have definitely thrown
    their hat in the ring?

Who will win? Who cares? Are any of them any good? What does this
mean for the country/for the liberals/for the PC's?

Without anybody from the west running, I'm not sure if *anybody* west
    of Kenora cares.

Are there any liberals left out west?!

Interesting to note the the PC party ... formerly a party of the west
more than any other region, is now a party of the east since they came
to power in 1984. The same old story, just a different party in power.
If they stay in power long enough (horrid thought) I'm sure they'd face
the same erosion that the Liberals did west of Ontario in the Trudeau
era (yes once upon a time there were Liberals in Alberta, Saskatchewan
and B.C.!). Political clout lies in numbers and those numbers are in
Quebec and Ontario. Mr. Mulroney is no less beholden to Quebec and to
a lesser extent Ontario than his Liberal predecessors.

I am for Sheila Copps. Ever seen her in real life? Wow. To bad I am not a
sound man for a major TV station.

What do you mean 'wow'? 'Sound man'...you mean, she's really LOUD
in person? From what I've seen, Sheila Copps is a BOWSER.

    re .5

I find Sheila Copps to be much better looking than, say, Jean
    Cretin, for example.

I'd like to see her win the leadership but I think it will be
Mr. Cretin who has Truedough go over his speeches with white-out and
    crayons.

My analysis of the candidates and reasons for liking/disliking.

Chretien is 'old' Liberal. While I admire him and think him emminently
qualified, he hasn't brought out one new idea. He is a politician
of the past and doesn't seem to have any ideas for the future of
    this country.

Martin, while relatively young, is another 'old' Liberal. He is
just a carbon copy of his father and we don't need that.

Copps is my choice. She is articulate, outspoken, opinionated and
at least has some ideas for the future. I also think she could rally
the whole party much better than the others. There will be a schism
if Chretien or Martin is chosen.

Lincoln is the Liberal Bob Stanfield. Well educated, articulate,
probably the best technical qualifications but blah.

Nunziata is jumping in because Copps jumped in. I classify him more
a rabble rouser than Shiela. Stir up sh*t but without solutions.

Is the list in .8 the list of people who have thrown in their hats for
Leadership race or are there others.

Lincoln - is this the Governor General? or am I getting them mixed up.

Alan, I think you're confusing Clifford Lincoln, the Liberal Party
leadership candidate with Lincoln Alexander, the Lieutenant-Governor
for Ontario. Quite simply, the difference is like night and day. 8*).

Jim, you must admit though that she is a lot better looking than Jean
Cretin. Besides I think she's a strong supporter of the Grand Canal.
About Cliffy Lincoln, imagine? Prime Minister Lincoln? Sounds wierd
don't you think? Mind you in a hundred years Canada could have its own
    Lincoln Memorial.

So the liberals were against free trade eh!

Where do they buy their convention hats, in the US!

I think the best of the bunch are the rinoceros party, at least they
tell you in advance they are going to screw you.

    Jean

PS if the rinos ever got in, the grand canal would be extended all the
way to Japan, they need water as well to fill those radiators in them
    toyotas.
