260.0. "Holiday Questions???" by SNO78A::BRESSINGTON () Wed Jan 24 1990 00:40

    Hi,

my wife and I will be travelling to your country in late May
early June this year staying mainly around the Vancouver - Calgary
area. I was wondering if you could enlighten us on a few questions,

    	1. What kinds of beer do you have and which do you recommend?

    	2. Is tipping a big issue at restraunts, etc.?

    	3. Is it hard to get accomodation around this time of year without
    	   booking first?

    	4. Are the roads fun to drive on (good roads or bad)?

We are looking forward to having a great holiday and any answers
to these questions would be much appreciated.

    		Regards and thanks,

Instead of driving around the highways you might want to drive on
    them. Less bumpy.
    	     		8-)

Just remember to drive on the right side of the road.

260.3Don't tip on the Grand CanalPOLAR::RICHARDSONHe who laughs bestWed Jan 24 1990 14:156
I recommend booking an excursion on the Grand Canal, this would
be much more fun than driving on bumpy roads. Nobody cares which side
of the Grand Canal you cruise on, unless you rent a Grand Canoe.

Vancouver has a micro-brewery called Granville Island Brewing.
I liked it. Also, I believe Rickards' Red is brewed in B.C. The
best beers in Canada are brewed by these smaller outfits.

    G'day,

thanks for the replies so far. I can't wait to sample some
    of the beers.

Re: .3 What and where is the Grand Canal???

The roads sound very good to me. My only problem is going
to be driving on the wrong side of the road. If I were you I'd avoid
the highways around the time I'm there.

Also, is there anyone who could shed some light on the
accomodation side of things as to wether to book first or not. I'm
hoping not to book but just travel around and stay where the place
looks nice and is reasonably priced ($50-75C per night).

    	  Regards and thanks,

The replacement for the Northwest Passage.

>driving on the wrong side of the road

In Canada they drive on the right side of the road, except on the Grand
Canal towpath, in which case you drive in the middle.

Being a expatriate Brit who came to Canada to see what life in the
backwoods was like, I used to think the same. But you'll see that
the right side of the road really is the right side (and the left
side is something else - which is incidentally only used by people
who are going the wrong way).

BTW, don't worry about the Grand Canal. It starts and stops in Pat
Rushton's basement after the spring thaw. He really should make
    better use of his snowbags.

The Grand Canal is not Pigment of Pat's imagination - don't let your
judgement of Canada be coloured by the confusion of others.

The Grand Canal will be completed one day, as painful a process it
may be. Just look at the St. Lawrence Seaway, which started it all, the
root of the concept, as it were, actually the St. Lawrence Seaway will
be renamed the Grand Root Canal in honour of its contributions to the
    way of the cause.

    Speaking of causeways ...

By all means, do come to this strip of wasteland north of the US.
The Grand Canal has recently been opened for public leisure -
skating, sledding, drinking and vomiting during the winter; and
canoeing, punting, drinking and rutting during the summer.

Be aware that during the summer you must keep back at least 50 yards
from the lock doors whilst performing the aforementioned acts,
particularly rutting, as the vibrations create violent waves which
have been known to swamp the coast of Europe.

Oh yes, one more thing. The use of punts on the canal is often
	referred to as...

Punting from the 50 yard line...

And you will see some silly looking punts on the canal, mind!

	In dire straits,

	Pat

260.11I have some info on accommodationsCASPRO::LENNOXThu Feb 22 1990 12:5317
    Hi,

I too am planning a trip to Calgary and the Canadian Rockies area -
Banff and Jasper - for June. I have already obtained the AAA booklets
with many hotel suggestions for the area along with prices and am
waiting to get the Chamber of Commerce stuff from Banff which should
arrive any day. I'm one of those people who can't enjoy a trip
without alot of research materials to read....Anyway, if you would
like some specific info about hotels/motels, I would be glad to
send it along but this would probably be easier to do by mail so
you can send me a note at CASPRO::LENNOX. I plan to make accommodation
reservations soon so I will be able to tell you if I have trouble
    booking or not.

    Hope this helps.
