Gatineau Park is just across the river from Ottawa in the province
of Quebec.
It is owned and administered by the National Capital Commission
which has property on both sides of the river in both provinces.
It has exceptional cross country skiing in a really beautiful setting.
There are user fees but they aren't exhorbitant. As well the NCC
maintains cross country trails throughout the region in the area
know as the Greenbelt, an undevelopped area surrounding the city.
There are miles and miles and kilometres and kilometres of free
trails all over.
The tourist bureau or the NCC should be able to provide information.
If you are considering coming for some skiing, come during Winterlude
in early February and get the whole thing. There is a separate note
in here on Winterlude.

Roger:
You didn't mention the snow conditions. We've got kilograms and
kilograms and hectares and hectares of snow. However, the fee for one
snow bag full of snow (approximately 200 kilograms), so that you can
cover the bare trails with snow over the portion that you wish to travel,
is $50, or one 2-4. Or you can rent a portable snow-making machine that
straps on your shoulders and fires a stream of snow over your head onto
the trail ahead of you. The cost is $100/hour and you have to provide
your own air and water.
The NCC will alleviate the poor snow conditions next year by using
a new chemical on the fallen autumn leaves. This chemical will produce
a new variety of quick-growing snow which can be replenished by periodic
sprinkling and occasional ironing.
Enjoy,
Pat

254.3 | What is the terrain like? | INFACT::SCHWARTZ | What shall I give? ...My heart! | Tue Jan 09 1990 21:16 | 17 |
| I l-o-v-e cross-country skiing, except, of course, we hardly get any snow down
here in central Indiana. (Fortunately, there was plenty on the ground in
Toledo when I went home for Christmas!) Ottawa sounds like a great place to
plan a winter vacation.
Tell me, how hilly is it around Ottawa (part of my family is from Vermont, so I
understand that "hilly" is a relative term, so please qualify your answer)?
Indianapolis is totally flat, so I have little cross-country experience on
hills. Are some of the trails relatively level?
(And PLEASE, no comments about the towpath of the Grand Canal being level. I
ski along the Central Canal in Indianapolis and the Miami & Erie Canal in
Toledo and want a change of scenery.)
THE HANDY HOOSIER,
Russ Schwartz.

Ottawa is dead in the middle of a valley (for some reason called
the Ottawa Valley) so terrain varies widely. There are some real
flat spots, some swamp area, small hills and big hills.
The Park is actually in an area called the Gatineau Hills. There
are some downhill runs around but they aren't too high.
Without joking, Ottawa also has the Rideau Canal which runs through
the city. It is converted into a 8Km/5mi long skating every winter
with change huts, refreshment booths, etc. Also an enjoyable time.
