The Cable News Network ran a brief piece about a new pay equity law. I believe the law applied to provincial and local governments and companies with more than 500 employees. It mandated that jobs of comparable worth be paid comparable wages. In many cases, jobs that of similar worth, such as (examples are mine, not the story's), nurse and programmer, might have a wide difference in pay, often associated with the percentage of women or men in that field. If there is a disparity, then the employer must raise the pay of all of the lower paid employees. Any ideas how this law might affect Digital in Ontario and what this might portend for other sites?

Your personnel rep (or manager) has all the details. What is the big concern anyway? If people think that they can be payed more for the same work....move to another company. Why not let the "free market" set the salaries? Do we really want Queens Park involved?

The free market hasn't always done well in the area of pay equity. Secretarial work is rarely valued in dollars at a level appropriate to the importance in the organization. And, it's no accident, in my opinion, that most secretarial jobs are filled by women. It's essential to me, as manager, that we treat people fairly; qualified people are too difficult to locate and are the first ones to find new jobs when pay problems arise.

It my interest you all to know that Grand Canal Project was the first undertaking in Canadian history, as well as Albertan, to have a guarantee of pay equity. This was done in order to keep the oposition parties from digging up negative press on the Grand Canal. This is of course, water under the bridge, as it were. Glenn |
