| Right and wrong Scooter. If not Canadian, no problem. If
you are a Canadian driving a U.S. plated rental car into Canada,
you've got a problem. One of those non-tariff barriers I guess.
In July I flew to Seattle, then drove to Vancouver. At the border we
were informed that we could not drive a rental car with U.S. plates on
it. The customs agent told us that if we were pulled over by the
police in Canada, driving a car with U.S. plates, not registered to us,
we would have a lot a hassles resolving the situtation. But they let
us through, after we stated we would drop the car in Vancouver and
exchange it for one with Canadian plates. We didn't, and a week later,
we crossed back in the U.S. without difficulty.
Apparently, there are permits for Canadians to drive U.S. vehicles in
Canada. But check before you get there, because we couldn't get a
permit at the border.

| re: .2
(can I elaborate).
Ok -
>> I intend to fly to Seattle, then drive a rental car to Canada.
>> Is it also prohibited ?
No.
(how's that ?)
re: .3
(yes & no )
I found out the same thing when I asked about operating a U.S.
registered private plane (rented from a Buffalo FBO) and was told
I couldn't, for similar reasons and when I argued I was told "It's
the same as for a rental car. Stop yer bitchin'" (Paraphrase).
Point is, the respondant in .0 does not represent himself as a
Canadian, and I assumed not. I gave the simple answer in .1 that
I considered wholly correct, given the question.
Oh, sorry, you didn't ask for elaboration, didya ?
nevermind 8^)

| I have done both; rented a Canadian AVIS car and drove in the USA
and rented a USA AVIS car and drove in Canada while on DEC
business. Since I work for Ed Services, I do travel back and
forth across the Canadian border. I have never had a hassle.
The issue of having owner ship of a foreign registered car; the
rental documents is the same as permission granted by the rental
car company to your driving the car anywhere. (Even in Mexico).
If you drive a rental car to Mexico, you MUST buy Mexician
insurance. Having the rental car papers may not help you since
the papers are in English.
BTW, if you are a DEC employee, always ask for the DEC corporate
rate. It'll save you $$$. If it's personal business, you ought to
get the additional insurance; if you're on company business, you
are not to purchase the additional since DEC is self insured in
that case.
