Note 268.0 Canadian performers on disk? 4 replies
NEWS::HAKKARAINEN "Dressed to injure" 15 lines 5-SEP-1989 09:45
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While on vacation in Canada, I attended a musical that dealt with the
Canadian music industry over the past three or so decades. Pretty
good stuff. One of the main themes is, as one would expect, that music
from Canada routinely gets buried.
I've heard Jack Scott's stuff before, but I'd not associated the name
with the music. His tune ``The Way I Walk'' was covered, I think, by
Robert Gordon and Link Wray.
The music of Stompin' Tom Connors and Ronnie Hawkins was also featured.
My copy of the Schwann catalogue is a couple of months old, but lists
none of these performers. I've yet to go through all of the anthologies.
Any pointers to disks from these folks?

What, Who is "Tears Are Not Enough"?
This note sounds like a great idea.

| <<This is Ted. You know I've been away from home for a lonnnnng time.
<<What, Who is "Tears Are Not Enough"?
Ted, old son! I was wondering where you had gone. "Tears are
Not Enough" was Bryan Adams' (and his producer, Jim Vallance) idea to
respond to the famine in Ethiopia a few years ago - that is, generate
large gobs of money from the proceeds of the video/album/cassette and
TV rights of a musical production consisting of Canadian artists.
It was a Canadian version of the Bob Geldof effort in the UK.
The Canadians are appear on the video I have include:
Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams, Cory Hart, Ronny Hawkins,
Luba, Lisa Dalbello, Veronique Beliveau, Robert Charlebois, Gord Lightfoot,
David Foster, Platinum Blonde, Lover Boy, etc.
As I mentioned before, I've got it so can we make a deal?

238.7 | How to order | KAOM25::RUSHTON | Render the day oblivious. | Mon Nov 06 1989 11:11 | 17 |
|
For those who are interested in obtaining a copy of the video,
"Tears are Not Enough", you can write to the following address or call
the Montreal order desk of the CBC:
CBC Enterprises
P.O. Box 500, Station A
Toronto, Ontario
M5W 1E6
or call the order desk in Montreal at (514) 597-4041 and ask for 'Dave'.
The video is available in Beta and VHS, and in digital stereo.
The cost is $29.95 (Canadian). Unfortunately, it is available in NTSC
only, i.e. it can't be used with a PAL or SECAM vcr.

| HI PAT,
I'D LOVE TO GET A HOLD OF THE VIDEO BUT AS YOU WELL KNOW PAL IS THE
SYSTEM USED HERE IN EUROPE SO THERE AIN'T NO POINT IN ME ORDERING IT.
THANKS FOR THE EXPLANATION. HOW'S YOURSELF AND THE FAMILY? WELL
I HOPE.
ALL THE BEST,

238.10 | My PAL, Don Harron | KAOM25::RUSHTON | Render the day oblivious. | Tue Nov 14 1989 10:51 | 24 |
| Ted:
There is hope for a PAL version of the video. I shall
contact the CBC and ask if I can make a PAL copy of my original -
this request is necessary as the CBC holds the copyright. The
conversion from NTSC to PAL is readily available in the Ottawa
area for about $30 per hour. As I won't be purchasing a new
tape because they don't have it in PAL, the cost of purchasing
($29.95) will go towards the conversion costs. Are you game?
Also, some time back you asked for a copy of a book by
Don Harron, or a list of his books. Well, I have a new book in
my hot, little hands and I shall send it over to you as a...say,
...Christmas gift. It's called 'Cum Buy the Farm' and it's
written in dialect!! I know some people who talk like the way
he writes in the book.
The family is fine, thanks for asking, and how is yours?
How did your son do in the Judo competition in June?
Sln,
Pat

238.12 | | KAOM25::RUSHTON | Render the day oblivious. | Wed Nov 15 1989 17:08 | 12 |
| Ted:
The tape is about 1 hour long, so the total cost for
converting to PAL would be about $30 (the price of an NTSC copy).
With regards to the rest of your note...I shall reply
via VAXmail.
Regards,
Pat

Is there anyone at home who knows where or how I can get hold of
a audio cassette of the group Lighthouse? I think they were absolutely
brilliant but like most good things Canadian also underrated.
I went to their reunion concert at Ontario Place in 1982 and it
was one of the best concerts I was ever at. The atmosphere was more
like a family reunion than anything else.
Hope somebody can help.

I have an old album of Lighthouse that I am sure I

you.

Diane Dufresne - "Diane in Concert"
Last week, I deleted by accident the tape I made when the concert was
broadcasted here in Europe.
1. Has somebody a tape (that he/she could copy for me - expenses prepayed)?
2. Is the concert available on CD in Canada (I checked - not in Europe)?

Third album has just come out and it's (IMHO) phenominal. It makes
their other work pale in comparison. I haven't been able to do
anything but listen to it for the past week, that's why I thought I'd
see what I could find out about them.
I know they were working on an album that was due for release in 1990,
and it never made it out. I sort of was wondering where they've been
for the last 2 years, I really missed them.
So P/P made it pretty big? I liked it too. Only song of theirs I ever
heard on the radio down here was "Should I See".

The new record is called "Shake Your Spirit" and I got it last week. I
was really surprised that the record store had it, I figured I'd have
to order it.
Where do these boys play? Are they concert tour league? If so, and I
figure they must be, do they open for other groups or are they
mainliners? How popular are they up there?
Thanks for any info at all
