221.0. "WHERE AND WHAT?" by DASXPS::GKOPPS () Tue Aug 29 1989 13:58

    Hello,
I will be visiting Toronto Sept. 2, 3, and 4 and will be staying
at the Westbury (near Yonge and College sts.). Does anybody know
anything about this area? Is there things to see/do near there?
Any good nightclubs/restaurants/bars/shops in this area? Should I rent
a car or use taxi/transit service to see the other areas of interest
in Toronto? What are the other areas of interest?
I will be up there for the Rolling Stones concert and I can't
really get a feel for the city from the map I have and I will be
trying to cram as much in as I can in the few short days.

    	Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    George

Staying at Yonge and College will put you right in the heart of
T.O. Some of sites around there are of course Yonge Street itself,
the largest street in the world, but only interesting from Queen
    to Bloor.

Places you want to check out Bloor St. between Spadina and Bathurst.
There are a lot of little cafes and things around here, the U. of
    T. crowd kind of place. Try to make it to Albert's Hall, a Blues
Mecca in Toronto. They usually have big name blues acts playing
    here.

Queen St. West is very good also. This is another artsy area, just
west of Yonge St. Lots of good bars here. My favourites are Chicago's
a little blues place that really cooks on friday nights. Queen St.
also has the Bamboo Club. This is a bar/music place, very nice.
The bands are usually hi-life, latin, raggae. I'd recommend it very
    highly.

If you tastes are not quite as the above, you may want to check
out the Madison, a bar on Madison Ave. (north of Bloor near St.
George), the Bel-Air Cafe - in trendy Yorkville north of Bloor between
Avenue Rd. and Yonge. A great place to walk around and check the
scenery - Yorkville, not the Bel-Air Cafe.

Now, you don't need to rent a car in Toronto. Most of the places
mentioned are more or less within walking distance of Yonge & College.

I hope the above helps, there are other bars too, like Amsterdam's,
Pat & Mario's, the Boom Boom Room etc. The best thing to do would
be get a copy of NOW magazine when you get into Toronto. This is
a great little rag that lists all that's happening in Toronto.
You should be able to pick it up anywhere on Yonge.

Let us know how the concert and your trip goes.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THAN YOU! AND I AM A SERIOUS BLUES FAN!!!

I forgot to mention another great blues place that I used to go
to when I first moved to Toronto, is Grosmans. Its on Spadina just
near Dundas. The place is a real dive, but the music is great.

The best bet however has to be Albert's Hall on Bloor, I've seen
just about all of the artists on Aligator records there at one time
    or another.

I just heard that the Canadian Government has lost the keys to
    the Grand Canal.

The Minister of Public Works stated that they will now have
    to change all the locks....

Good thing we have the GST to pay for it all, eh?

Lost the keys to the locks, eh? [groan...]

I've never been to Toronto, but if I were going I'd surely read all these
associated, and Highly Visible, notes:

3, 7, 16, 66, 91, 99, 104, 127, 141, 160, 165, 166, 183,
187, 189, 208, and last, but necessarily least, 218.

But I wouldn't read _this_ one because based on the title I wouldn't have a
clue that it relates in any way, shape, or manner to Toronto!

    Thanks Kip,

Sorry to put you through the agony of reading another repetitive
note/topic but I do not do much noting and probably did not follow
proper protocal. Anyway I checked out the clues you gave me and
    found them very informative.

    thanks again

The proper protocol here is commonly referred to as "handshaking".
So now, after writing the note, you are obliged to come to Canada,
shake hands with all the noters here, then help us look for the
    keys ...

And will their be gondoliers on the Grand Canal?

Please note that the Grand Canal will not have any water in it for
    a while.

Apparently some Canadians have not responded to the request for
their old full snow bags which the government intends to melt down.
The plastic would be used to line the sides of the canal to ensure
no toxic waste which might be in the snow would leach out.

Come on people get those snow bags sent in so our visitors will
be able to see a functioning canal.

I also recommend Downtown Browne's on Front Street East (near
intersection of Front and Jarvis). And if you pick up NOW, check
the listings in the back to see where the Cameo Blues Band is playing.

Maybe we should get Sloblaw's to implement a snow bag deposit box
at each supermarket outlet. You know "Give, so the Grand Canal can
    live" so to speak.

Duplicate keys can be cut ONLY from the Rideau Canal, and
	ONLY during spring break-up.

This oversight is another example of the reason for the
cost over-runs for the Grand Canal, and for the shortage
of snow bags (for the second year in a row, mind!).

Don't listen to Richarson's catwauling about the Green Sludge
Party - he's the only guy I know who drags his garbage to the end
of his driveway and then beats it with a barge pole until the
garbage truck picks it up and spoils his fun.

He's also the only guy who has personally experienced why he
has a brain only slightly larger than a bull's brain...

	Oh, for goodness sakes,

	Pat

Oh, lock it anyway! The bloody keys melt during the summer so no
one's gonna be able to use it until Nov or Dec.

Glenn's not sulking but he should be careful when he laughs like that -
he could do himself an injury.
