213.1 | After 1990 - Maudit Goose Bay, Qubec | KAOM25::RUSHTON | Render the day oblivious. | Fri Jul 28 1989 11:32 | 24 |
| < Note 213.0 by ANT::PPAGELS >
<I am thinking about taking the ferry from Lewisporte NF up to
<Goose Bay. Can anyone tell me anything at all about Labrador?
Well, Patty you had better go there in the near future. Within
six months Labrador will be repatriated to Qubec, after the completion
of the Grand Canal and the James Bay Watershed Diversion Project. Qubec
will then call Labrador, Bras d'Or (to make it more cosmopolitan).
By the way, Goose Bay is actually a suburb of the larger Indian
city called Sheshashits. There are a number of exciting night spots,
such as:
The Squat Inn - famous for caribou frisbees.
The Geek Hotel - excellent vantage point to watch NATO overflights
at Mach 2, 15 metres above ground.
Camp Throw-up - a good spot for after-dinner treats.
Do you desire more information?

The Republic of Newfoundland would never cede the land that God

If Patty could ask some specific questions, maybe we can answer
them.

| How come Newfoundlanders refer to the mainland portion of their
gerrymandered province as "_The_ Labrador"?

213.4 | Old expression | TRCA03::OBRIEN | Glenn O'Brien @TRC 18/6 | Tue Aug 15 1989 10:31 | 10 |
| The expression dates back to the days when the fishing fleets would
go north to fish, off THE Labrador Coast. Over time, the fishermen
dropped the Coast. But it's seldom used, except by old-timers.
St. John's has a similar origin. Before a settlement started there,
the harbour was known as St. John's Harbour (discovered on the Feast of
St. John the Baptist, I believe). As a town grew up, it was called
St. John's.

What about 'The Gasp', did they just drop the 'penninsula' from the
name over time as well?

213.6 | Any Other former Goose Bay residents out there? | MASTR::FRENCH | Bill French 381-1859 | Fri Nov 05 1993 13:10 | 16 |
| Has anyone else in this notes file lived in Goose Bay?
(I just discovered this notes file in preparation for a Montreal trip
by my wife and I 3 weeks from today)
I lived on "The Goose" for most of 1966, courtesy of the U.S.A.F.
I'll bet that there are other DECcies who have been stationed
there, courtesy of either the U.S.A.F. or R.C.A.F.
I'm curious as to whether there is still either a U.S. or Canadian
Air Force Preesence there.

| Bill,
Haven't lived there, but I use to be in Halifax, and we did a lot of
work here. As well I'm a Naval Air brat who knows a little about Goose
Bay.
As far as I know only the Gemans, Dutch, and Brits use the
base as an operational base, using it for low level flight training.
They tried to make it a NATO base for all countries but it fell
through, due to politics.
I think Canada maintains a token presence there now. Not sure though.
I know DEC has done some work there for the Germans.
A lot of political turmoil with this base as the natives claim the low
level flights disrupt the caribou herds and their native way of life.
As well, there were some problems with toxic waste left from year of
military presence.
There was an article in last month's National Geographic on Labrador
which you might be interested in reading as well. It mentions Goose
Bay.
