205.0. "Name that 'Expo' tune" by SUBURB::CASSELLSM (I can feel a XXXX coming on!) Wed Jul 12 1989 12:45

G'day from an Aussie living in England.

I come from Brisbane where World Expo 88 was held last year (see
note # 78). The Canadian pavilion was judged the best of all the
countries participating. I personally visited the pavilion about
30 times during the 6 months of Expo.

In the first theatre of the pavilion was an impressive slide
presentation set to a song called (if my memory serves me right)
"Canada". My question is: Is this song well known in Canada and
is it possible to get a recording of it. It's one of those tunes
you just can't get out of your head (even after a year).

    Many thanks,

    Mike.

I just realized that you were talking about Expo 88 in Australia.
The song I just sang 8^) was from Expo '67 in Montreal, during
    our Centennial.

    Hum, "Vivre la Canada"
            | | |------ This we know
            | |---------- this should be "le" since Canada (the word)
            | is of the male gender.
            |--------------- this should be "vive" (vivre = to live)

    Vive le Canada anyway,

    Jean

Since we're on the topic of Canadian tunes...

...one thing that has always stuck in my mind was the beautiful music which
accompanied the '76 Olympics in Montreal. Especially haunting was the long,
beautiful-yet-mournful closing solo played by Maynard Ferguson, followed by
people dancing joyously in the Olympic stadium. For me, the joy and beauty of
those moments outshines even my own country's bicentennial in my memory.

Then during one of those trivial moments in ABC's broadcast of the winter '88
Olympics in Calgary, Jim McKay mentioned in passing that all of the '76 music
was composed by a Canadian named (I think this is correct) Dominic Frontiere.
I have checked the analog of "Books in Print" for records, and have never found
anything by this fabulous composer. How I would love to hear those tunes
again.

Can anybody comment on this work?

Russ Schwartz.
205.7Record's At Home !KAOFS::LOCKYERGarryMon Jul 17 1989 09:1810
I have the music from the Montreal Olympics at home. I'll try to
locate it and get you some more information. The name you mentioned
didn't sound familiar, but you could be correct. In any event, the
composer was French Canadian and he was considered a chiled prodigy.
I believe he died at a very young age.

        Regards,

    >> -< Is this Toronto french? >-

    >> Vivre

    	was a typo, sorry.

    >> la Canada

was an error, since, for some dumb reason, I thought Canada
    was of the feminine gender.

    >>Vive le Canada anyway

    yup.
