179.0. "Agates in Nova Scotia?" by ENGINE::HEIKKILA () Fri May 12 1989 18:11

I'm planning a trip to Nova Scotia over the Memorial day weekend
(May 27th-29th). I have seen agates from there and wanted to do some
beach-combing for agates but Nova Scotia is a big place. Any
    suggestions?

Oh, an agate is a semi-precious stone (consisting of quartz) that
usually has bands of varying colors and can come in almost any
    shape or size.

By the way, Canadians aren't the only people who say eh, eh? Visit the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan sometime (most americans think its part of
Canada anyway). And for you linguists out there, I think we use "eh"
differently, though I can't describe how (only as a question and not at
the end of a statement?) Maybe its from watching Canadian television
(CKPR and CTV) as a kid 8-}. Who doesn't know Relick, Nick, Molly and
the gang as well as the Irish Rovers? Had to get my 2 in from note
    4.*

    Matt:

The world renowned Minas Basin. The centre for all rock-hounds
is Parrboro on the north-east shore of the Minas Basin. The closest
large town is Truro. The area is also known for one of the world's
largest tidal bores - in height not interest.

    Enjoy,

    Pat

Well, I'm back. Didn't have time to look for agates but here are
some spots I was told to look:

    Blomidon (sp?)
at the base of "the wife"? at Five Islands Provincial park (low tide)
also on the beaches of the biggest Island (beaver?) but you need a boat
    and re .1, Parrboro.

I was thoroughly amazed at how similar Nova Scotia is to the Upper
Peninsula of Michigan. I felt like I'd gone home. The Annapolis
Valley Apple Blossom festival would top any Oktoberfest at home (except
    that there weren't any bratwurst 8-} ).

Any Canadian/Maritimes scuba divers reading this? I'd like to here about
diving in your area (in the scuba notes of course. RAINBOW::SCUBA)
