161.0. "Native Americans in Canada?" by ANT::MORRISON (Bob M. LMO2/P41 296-5357) Sat Mar 18 1989 20:03

I have a trivial question. Indians (the people who were here first) are now
usually called "Native Americans" in the U.S., partly to avoid confusing them
with Indians from India. "Native Americans" doesn't work well for Canadian
Indians, so what are they called? "Native Canadians"? If they are always
called Indians, how do people avoid confusing them with Indians from India
in Canada?

Gee, I don't know - I went to school with a fellow who was a Micmac
Indian, and he (and we) always referred to tribes, never "Indians"
    - although I do remember a History class in which he referred to
North American Indians as "the Native Peoples".

May I suggest you post your query in the "NATIVE_AMERICANS" conference?
That way, the people themselves can tell you what they like to be called.

Here, I'll make it easy for you:
Press KEYPAD_7 and "NATIVE_AMERICANS" will automatically be added to your
notebook.

And here's my own US$.02 worth:

My great-grandmother was a full-blooded "Indian" from Quebec. I use the term
"Native American" to characterize that part of my heritage. But then, I use
"American" as a generic term to mean "member of the western hemisphere" and
*NOT* "US citizen". Then again, I'm a little wierd... :-)

Yours,

Russ Schwartz.

During one of my summer jobs, I worked with the Gitskan-We'etsuwesen
Tribal Council, on the North-West coast of B.C., and had extensive
    discussions about this very topic.
    Generally:
Indian - is out, even considered derogatory by some.
    Native American - didn't discuss this but, I imagine its a no-no
    Aborginal People - Acceptable, good.
Native Canadian - implications of Indian: Native is a native, not
    someone with a secondary identity.
    Native - This is better.
A native's tribe (ie. Nishga, Haida, etc.) - the best.
