154.1 | A is the sensible choice | MQOFS::DESROSIERS | Lets procrastinate....tomorrow | Thu Mar 02 1989 11:04 | 13 |
| Go for plan A, it is at least half as expensive as what your neighbor
is payin for a car, plus you don't have to put up the money to buy
the vehicule, not to mention the lack of worry about maintenance,
insurance, plates...all in all a good deal.
If you don't care about driving what's on the plan, well, you pays
the money and you takes your choices!

PS And in Ontariario, the taxable benifits are even lower than in
Qubec, so be happy.

154.2 | "out-of-stock order?" | TROA01::DZIALOWSKI | | Fri Mar 10 1989 09:30 | 12 |
| Right! Car plan A is by far the best if all you want is a good set
of wheels to go where you have to at a good price and not have to
worry about it.
Now, I have a question:
This year, it seems that the only input we have is the choice is
the brand and the color. There are no extra options we can order
and nobody in fleet will give you a listing of the vendor standard
options (Chrysler used to give all the goodies standard, while Ford
would give nothing). It seems that we can go through a procedure
call "out-of-stock" order if we need additional options.
How does it works ?

154.3 | Plan B for Me | TRCO01::RBOUCHER | Nothing human is of serious concern...Plato | Fri Mar 10 1989 10:07 | 32 |
| Go for plan B. At least you will own something if you decide to
leave DEC. Also, try and get insurance if you've been on plan A
for a while...it will cost mega bucks because you haven't been insured
for a while (at least in TO).
Cost Summary (- = you pay, + = you get) My figures from my experience.
Yearly costs Plan A Plan B
Insurnace 0 -800
Tax benefit -2000 (est) 0
Plan fees -2100 +4380
Maintenace 0 -600 (year)
Allow. Exp. + CCA 0 +2000 (tax refund)
Operating Cost 0 -1000
--- -----
-4100 3980
After 4 years on plan A you will have paid out with nothing to show
approx. 16-17K. Now with plan B, assume you paid
20K for the car with a bank loan that cost $1500 in interest a year
at the end of 4 years your net is 4 * 3980 - 6000 is a net positive
flow of $10K. Then you can sell the car for say 10K. With the money
you get, from my calculations you break even on plan B. Plan A cost
you money.
The only thing that may screw up this calculation is mileage. If
you're going to drive a lot on business, then plan A may be better
as maintenance costs rise for plan B and the resale value drops.

154.6 | Thanks for the responses | TROA02::MSCHNEIDER | What me worry? | Fri Mar 10 1989 10:28 | 15 |
| Thanks for the feedback .... as I have a long daily commute it appears
that Plan A is the better choice for me though I appreciate the
complete breakdown of costs and benefits. Should my location relative
to the office change, I think Plan B would be a better choice.
One item in Plan A that is a real bummer is the "no extra options"
policy. Take it like it is specified or ... well there is no OR if you
want Plan A. As I understand it in recent years employees could add
options (at their own cost) to the Plan A vehicles. That seems to have
disappeared this year. I don't know about you but I consider a
cassette player a "required" feature and would be quite willing to pay
the upgrade cost. Besides, I just love listening to those Digital
audio cassettes on the way to and from work. :)

154.7 | options... | TROA02::DZIALOWSKI | | Mon Mar 13 1989 09:05 | 7 |
| Right! You love listening to those Digital cassettes...
It seems that the cassette deck is standard this year (at least
on Ford). As Fleet is not in the business of supllying service or
informations, you will have to check with the fleet-lease rep at
your local GM/Ford/Chrysler dealer to find out what options come
standard from the factory...

154.9 | compelled to oblige... | TROA02::DZIALOWSKI | | Mon Mar 13 1989 18:04 | 11 |
| From some of the notes above, it looks that car plan B is a good
deal if you find a newly hired DECsucker to buy your lemon.
A car plan is not really designed as an equity building tool (or you'd
buy it from your favorite bank or broker). Nobody yet has demonstrated
that his tax return was a consequence of his being on car plan B!
If you go car plan A, you are allowed 10% of mileage for personal
use, anything above is additional taxable benefit. If you have a
long commute to the office (which count as personal use), you'd better
schedule some weekly visit(s)to Sarnia, Chatham and Windsor customers.
Just give a call, and I'll arrange for that.

154.10 | please count correctly | MQOFS::DESROSIERS | Lets procrastinate....tomorrow | Tue Mar 14 1989 16:22 | 19 |
| My calculations follow,
yearly charge: 2100
taxable benefit 800 of which Il'l pay about 400
Total 2500
Where else can you get a car for $2500 a year with no money down?
My gas bill for last year alone was $1500, now just add insurance,
plates, maintenance, tires....
The previous calculations forgot to mention that (for field service)
the monthly allowance HAS to be included in your T4 as income, that's
$4500 added which means a good $2000 comes out of your pocket!
A lot of people went on plan B to drive fancy cars, but they came
back on A because it's cheaper.

| What's the old quote?
"If you have to ask how much it is than you can't afford it."
If you'd even think about driving one of the gumper mobiles that
are available on Plan A than it must be the plan for you.
For those of you who enjoy a car as a fine machine, not just
transportation, than consider Plan B.

154.13 | PH&H no deal anymore? | KAOFS::R_DAVEY | | Mon Jun 13 1994 16:49 | 14 |
| Has anyone out there requested quotes from PH&H for a new car lately
and then compared them to deals that can be made at the dealer?
I just got a PH&H quote for an Eagle Vision ESi of $22,295 for the
base (no options) model. This is about $500 MORE than what the
dealer show as the Manufacturers Suggested List. The dealer is
offering $1500 off list as his best deal.
Is the PH&H plan really no deal anymore? On the last car I
bought (in 86) the PH&H price was about 17% below MSL.

beginning to behave strangely but beginning to behave in a way that is
strangely different from the other strange ways in which you more
regularly behave.
