131.0. "Coalition? Minority? Another election?" by TRCA03::OBRIEN (Glenn O'Brien @TRC 17/6) Mon Nov 14 1988 17:47

Given that the Conservatives may be headed for a minority, and a
right-of-centre minority government can't last, what does everybody
believe would happen under this scenario. A poll today showed that
the P.C.'s are perhaps only 7 seats short of a majority. Coalition,
    anyone?

Coalition with whom? Neither of the other parties will have anything
to do with free trade and the PCs can't back off from it. We will
have a non-confidence motion the first time it is mentionned and
    another election.

If the PCs try for a referendum on the free trade issue, they might
stay in power longer with a minority government but not by too much.

If the Liberals get the minority, they could form an alliance with
the NDP, much as the Liberals and NDP did in Ontario. We would then
see an election as soon as the Liberals had recovered some money
    in their campaign funds.

131.2AND NOW ... LIBERAL FREE TRADE!TRCA03::CURZONRichard Curzon TRS 5/2Tue Nov 15 1988 14:2720
Liberal backers might have some surprises if Turner gets in.
What does he mean when he says he will "RENEGOTIATE" a free trade deal -
(that's the way he has been talking lately). Any deal that the
Americans sign will be not much different from the present one.

For sake of argument, I'll bet the change will be: Turner's name
will be on it instead of Mulroney's, and the horrendous job the PCs did
explaining the deal will be corrected. The Liberals always did a much
better job of that sort of thing. Maybe they will add a preamble
section or something that burbles a bit about social programs and water
to allay popular fears, without changing the text of the deal.

And the Libs and the PCs may not be as far apart on trade as it
seems, once they forget the emotion of the campaign and figure out their
post-election strategy. Turner was desparate to keep the NDP killing
him and becoming the #2 party, so he stole their issue. He's already
changing his tune, but people haven't noticed yet. He doesn't hate free
trade, he just says Brian's deal stinks. Turner's old Bay Street
backers, the ones that stuck with him through thick and thin, want free
trade. The sceptic has spoken...

I guarantee you that if Turner gets in, the Free Trade Deal will
be signed! As is! He will try to renegotiate the deal but that won't
wash with the Americans sooo, he'll sign it.
Turner won't get in anyway so just ignore the last paragraph.

Just ignore Glenn, someone shook his tariffs and he's trying to work his
trade free.

Pat believes that being Pro Free Trade is being Anti-Canadian. He thinks
that because I am for Free Trade I am less Canadian than he is!
Well Mr. Dual Citizenship Rushton, I TAKE UMBRAGE!! You sir do not have
a monopoly on Patriotism!!! "Sounds familiar somehow". I am a Canadian first and
last!!! Pat would prefer Canada to be a satellite of Great Britain just it used
to be when Britannia ruled the waves. God save the Queen and all that rot.

All this kind of reminds me of something a customer said in a meeting
one time, to no one in particular but a DEC in general, when we
(DEC) were agonizing over making a commitment to a particular project:

"You can either run with the big dogs, or stand on the porch and
    bark"

Without something like the FTA, we will relegate ourselves to the
porch, and put the leash on ourselves.

Thanks Scooter, for the last entry but I wonder what the rest of noters
think about the Canadian election, or is it a moot point?

This morning's (Saturday 19 Nov) Ottawa Citizen's headline "Tories Take
8% Lead" might gladden the hearts of true 'blue' Tory lovers and those
who admire our Prime Mover, the Right Horrible Brian Baloney.

The possibility of a Tory victory will ensure the enactment of the Free Trade
Agreement (FTA) and probably 'harmonize' the inequities that appeared in the
Macleans article, such as the glaring differences between the Canadian and
US murder and infant mortality rates. With the dismantling of our social
welfare and medical programs after FTA is enacted, we should be able to bring
up our murder and infant mortality rates to the higher US levels.

Then again, maybe with Free Trade we may be able to influence the US to the
extent that they will adopt our social welfare and medical programs with the
attendant drop that would accrue in their murder and infant mortality rates.

Newsflash!!!

Ottawa - CP wire service- A large flock of pigs was seen flying
over the Parliament Buildings at 09:00, this morning. The
Prime Mover, the Right Horrible Brian Baloney was heard to
bleat, "A Conservative government brings home the bacon".
Many observers fell asleep. Film at 10.

The only thing that concerns me is will ECM in 1992 warrant the
FTA as a strategy against the protectionism of "Fortress Europe".
