     Just out of curiosity...

What kind of school is Ryerson Polytechnic Institue (Toronto)?
How does it rate with other schools? Everytime I ask my cousin
(a Ryerson graduate) what kind of school it is, he tells me
that it's a "polytechnic school". What the hell is a "polytechnic
school"? What is its strengths in education?

    While I'm here...

Why is there a distinction between "university" and "college" in
Canada? Or at least, in Ontario?
119.14There is a differenceKAOM25::RICHARDSONHe who laughs bestMon Oct 03 1988 11:247
    re .13

You can't get a degree at a college. Only at a University can
you get a degree, and that goes for the whole country not just Ontario.
Now when your talking about Tuktoyaktuk, it's a different story......

Glenn (Tuk. U. is still the best)
119.15Community Colleges vs Affiliated CollegesKAOA12::FREREEric Frere @KAO DTN 621-2184Mon Oct 03 1988 14:0216
    re .13 & .14

Although there are colleges that are affiliated to universities.
These colleges tend to offer a program in a specialized area.
Example: King's College is affiliated to Western and specializes
in Social Work and Theology. You can, however, attend these colleges
and still major in other areas. The degree comes from the university.
And you are allowed to take a certain percentage of your course
from the university. I believe that this is exists in the U.S. as well
as independent colleges such as B.C. (Boston College).

What Glenn is refering to is Community Colleges that tend to offer
more technical courses and award diplomas. These programs are usually
    2 or 3 years long.

Ookay...are there ways to figure out what kind of school
    it is by its name?

Over on this side of the border, we have Dartmouth College which
isn't the same thing because it's in the Ivy League with Harvard
and Yale. Boston College is a major university with alot of big
    programs.

    Re: .16

There is really no way to know the type of school it is by it's
name. Most `colleges' in Canada are Community Colleges. I'm sure
that lists exists at provincial (or even federal) level of all
    post-secondary education institutes.

I knew about McGill (my alma mater). I've heard an unconfirmed rumor
that their law school will convert the curriculum to be taught
entirely (or mostly) in French. Has anyone heard anything similiar?
