108.0. "Canadian Lotto 6/49" by WFOV11::KOEHLER (Almost time to build another Igloo) Thu Sep 08 1988 08:14

I was wondering how many of you play your Canadian Lotto game. I
was in Pembrooke, Ont. last week and someone said the prize was
up to 10 million. So I bought a ticket. (well it was worth a shot)

I do like the fact that if you win, you get the whole lump sum and no
taxes are taken out. Down here we get the prize split into 20 payments
after State and Fed. taxes are taken out.

Does anyone know the winning number for Sept. 3rd.? I would like
to know if I'm going to have to move to Canada or not.

Yes......42!

No, no, no. 42 is the answer to the question "What is the meaning
of the universe and everything else"
108.3What does '42' mean, then?KAOM25::RUSHTONRender the day obliviousThu Sep 08 1988 15:104

I bet .0 checked his ticket, just to make sure though.

    No I didn't check my ticket, I don't use the number 42. Before I
left Canada last Sunday I looked in the newspaper and could not
find any reference to the Lotto. What, don't they publish the numbers?
Is that why none of you can give the winning number?

Jim...who comes from a town that has more million dollar winners
    than anywhere else in Mass.

Maybe the bonus number was '42'. i'd check my ticket if I were
you. Maybe you've become the next million dollar winner in your
    town!!!
108.6poor sucker!TROA01::DZIALOWSKIThu Sep 08 1988 22:564
I am sorry to have to let you know that you have been the victim
of a well known scam. Loto 6/49 does not exist. By now the crook
who sold you the ticket is enjoying a good time on your money somewhere
    warm, sunny and tax-free.
108.7Glad I only visit for five weeks a year.WFOV12::KOEHLERAlmost time to build another IglooFri Sep 09 1988 08:0216
I'm sure the crook got a long way on my dollar. (excuse me, $.80
U.S.) Up there in the North you really don't get much for a dollar.
A ride on the Metro, or a candy bar and a few assorted other things,
but that's about all. At least I can still buy a gallon of gas for
less than a buck, heck, I can buy a beer for less than a buck too.
I have noticed that your gov. has taxed just about everything, heavily.

All I asked was if anyone knew the six numbers that were drawn
for the Sept. 3rd. 6/49 drawing.

    Jim

p.s. I bought some type of scratch ticket for $2 and won $8 in return,
so I guess I'm ahead. I hope the person that did get my dollar is
    having a good time.

108.8But don't forget...KAOM25::RICHARDSONHe who laughs bestFri Sep 09 1988 09:219
Everything is heavily taxed up here, except............

    LOTTERY WINNINGS!!!!!

We have are priorities straight up here. I love paying $2.50 for
a gallon of gasoline because I KNOW I can keep all my lottery
winnings!! So you see, there's obviously more to live for up here.

108.9It's called 'social democracy'.KAOM25::RUSHTONRender the day obliviousFri Sep 09 1988 10:1823
>>We have are priorities straight up here.

Ya, I think we do. A country as large as Canada with it's
small tax base, i.e. small population has no alternative but to
derive revenue through taxation in order to provide essential
social services for it's citizens, but not at the expense of driving
away foreign investment. Canada has been called a welfare state
because of it's myriad of social programs that, when compared with
the US of A, appear very generous - taxes are correspondingly higher
in order to maintain the programs. Additionally, the federal
government taxes the 'richer' provinces to provide equalization
payments to the 'poorer' provinces, hopefully then all Canadians
will receive the same mediocre services without overburdening
the tax payers.

Frankly, I'd rather pay higher taxes to ensure that all
our citizens can enjoy a better standard of living, and avoid
the vast disparities that are obvious in 'non-welfare' states.

Sorry about the departure from my usual superciliousness,
but I just tanked-up on a large dose of caffeine.

Pat
108.10I'm from the "tax" state....WFOV12::KOEHLERAlmost time to build another IglooFri Sep 09 1988 11:1813
All points well taken. I do agree with all of you on the fact that
your country takes care of it's citizens, in many ways much better
than we do. Here you don't have to be a citizen to recieve benefits,
just get off the boat/plane, come to Mass., and get in line....
In the circles of people and friends that I visit in Canada, there
are many retired people and they seem to be doing very well for
themselves. Many do travel to Fla. for the winter too.

Your priorities seem to be right in line.

The September 3rd Lotto 6/49 winning numbers are.......................

Six number between 1 and 49 and a Bonus number which is often '42'.

I understand they are still looking for the lucky winner who is
    rumored to reside in Massachusetts.

Well, since you've moved here with your $10 million, you
should (in the spirit of regional equalization) distribute the
money amongst the 26 million Canadians.

108.14My wife wouldn't leave me any to share....WFOV12::KOEHLERAlmost time to build another IglooFri Sep 09 1988 14:2011
It wasn't really $10 million. It was $11 million and the prize was
    shared by two people.

Speaking of big $, a woman, never married, in her late 50's, won
something in the neighborhood of $55 million. She lives in Fla.
Even after taxes she will end up with a real nice piece of spending
    money.

By the way, that's Pembroke, Ontario, not Pembrooke! I will forego
the opportunity to take advantage of this oversite to offer it as
proof of the "American Ignorance of Canadian Geography". I will,
of course, assume that is was mere overzealousness on the behalf
of whatever finger types the "o" on your keyboard.

Thank you. I had one right, Number 16! I'm glad I didn't pay for it.
I received a free number in the mail. They wanted me to subscribe for
a year. They should have rigged it so that I would get a least the
smallest prize, then maybe I would continue to play!
