My name is Alastair,I live in England in a little village on the river
Thames near Reading about one hour west of London.I work in UK CMO
(Country Merchandising Organisation),I have been a Telesales
Specialist for one year selling mainly periphal products and next
month I am joining our Small Systems Group.They are currently selling
a wide range of products from the Decmate through to the Microvax
and the Vaxstation 3000 series.Hopefully this should increase my
value as a DEC employee who wants to go places.Just abit of background
info,I am twenty one and have only really got one year of worthwhile
work experience in a computer enviroment.I have family in Edmonton
(Alberta),London (Ontario) and Toronto.I have visited all these
places and many more.I've spent a total of one year in Canada over
a period of ten years and ten holidays and I LOVE the country and
the people.I'm really just waiting for the right time and the right
oppotunity to try and emigrate,however this has become increasingly
difficult over the last ten to fifteen years since my Mother and
Sisters emigrated!My Mother is returning to this country this year
to live.She is lucky enough like my sisters to have dual citizenship.
My question is how can I get a job preferably with DEC in Canada
and how can I emigrate?Anybody with any answers or any suggestions

Alastair,
As you may be aware, Canada has the so-called point system for
determining the suitability of potential immigrants. You should
get the necessary information from the Canadian embassy in London
(just off Trafalgar Square I recall). I think the number of points
needed is about 75. If you get one of more of your relatives to
write a letter on your behalf saying that they'll help resettle
you, that alone is worth something like 10 points! Speaking English
or French is worth about 5 or 6. Having a degree is 2 or 3. Coming
from certain areas of the world is a benefit, too. Your technical
skills should also count for a few. If you get a job (not that
easy) that'll easily put you over the top. The easiest way of course
to get into Canada is simply to deposit CDN$250,000 into some kind
of fund that'll invest in businesses in Canada with a guaranteed
return of about 7% or something like that. This gives you landed
immigrant status almost immediately.

Point system? This is the first I've ever heard of something like
that, its a good idea! You get quality applicants for emmigration.
I wish the U.S. would do that too.

Okay, more information that I believe is correct (although I am
not an immigration lawyer, etc, etc).
To emigrate to Canada, the first step if possible is to get some
kind of offer from an employer. If not, then go and get the
preliminary application form from the local consulate. This
application is an application for an application! Basically, it's
the first step in the screening process. What you say here is
critical! Some skills/professions are for the moment highly coveted
in Canada; I heard right now: RN, CPA, mechanic, artist, graphic
artist. If you qualify, then you'll be sent an application and can
eventually (I suppose) make it to Canada.
Apparently, the points given for certain attributes of the applicant
are not generally public knowledge. Also, the points given change
from time to time, to reflect skills that are in greater demand,
etc. Thus, it is entirely possible that one year RNs are all the
vogue, but the next year, there is such a surfeit of them that
no one'll give them the time of day!

I'm glad we are not going through all that to get a Student Visa for
my daughter. It has been a hassle so far though. Next week I have
to drive her to Montreal to get some type of papers and back to
the border to get her visa. We have talked to everybody it seems
and this is the only way.
Maybe she will emigrate when she graduates from McGill.
