72.4 | '89 Schedule Available? | HYDRA::KELLY | Gary Kelly | Wed Jun 07 1989 15:10 | 15 |
| Is there a 1989 Blue Jays Schedule available? Quite a few folks
from Mass are heading to Niagra for the annual Street (Deck) Hockey
Tournament on July 8 and 9 - and since one of my kids favorite baseball
team is the Blue Jays (yes, instead of the team that trades their good
players away) I was going to see if the Jays were at home between the
5th and the 15th, and who they were playing. Not to mention him being
able to see the Sky Dome.
Also, could someone recommend a hotel/motel in Toronto? (Possibly
for a group.) And how far a trip is it (miles and time) from
Niagra? Any preferred routes to follow?
I'm not asking too much am I?
Thanks, Gk

72.5 | Jays SkyDome Schedule | TRCA03::OBRIEN | Glenn O'Brien @TRC 18/6 | Thu Jun 08 1989 17:37 | 126 |
| Fortunate and unfortunate timing, but the Jays are in town against
Baltimore and Oakland at the begining and end of your vacation.
Fortunate because of the teams you'll see.
Unfortunate because the All-Star Break is in the middle.
I've included their schedule at the SkyDome for the remainder of
the year. To order tickets by phone, call (416)341-1234. I strongly
recommend ordering now, since the first 3 games drew about 140,000
fans, and this weekend's four-game series against Detroit is sold
out. I saw yesterday's game, and it's a great place to watch baseball.
As for Niagara, it's about an hour and a half from Toronto, depending
on the time of day you leave. The QEW, which connects Toronto and
Naigara, is a zoo during peak hours.

| Dave Stieb (17-8) goes against Dave Stewart (21-?) in tonight's
game.
Oakland's starting staff, though formidable, consists solely of
hard-throwing right-handers. Since the Jays line-up is strongest
with left-handed bats, I expect this series will be closer than
most Americans think.
The Jays' starting staff has performed well in September, getting
virtually no run support. Flanagan, who gets the call in game 3, threw
six-innings of one-hit ball. Stottlemyre, who pitches in game 2, has
pitched very well since his callup from Syracuse. Key, who been
effective since coming off the DL, didn't pitch that well in Sturday's
game. Also, Toronto's bullpen is better, and deeper than Oakland's
(depleted by the Henderson trade). Henke is getting 1.5 strikeouts an
inning, Acker has been incredible since the trade, and Ward has been
great when he isn't walking 10 in a row. If pitching wins it, Toronto
has an even chance of beating Oakland.

| Last night, our heroes went down to defeat, 7-3, at the hands of
the mighty A's. Stieb did not pitch well. Acker who relieved Stieb,
got a ground ball to get out of the sixth inning, but Rickey Henderson
took out Liriano with a clean slide at second. Two runs scored,
bumping the score to 5-3. Then Duane Wild, I mean Ward, came on
and did what he does best: throw wild pitches. Two more runs.
Dave Stewart started poorly, but recovered to get the win.
Home Runs by Whitt, Dave Henderson, and Mark McGuire.

| The Jays lost 6-3 last night. Stottlemyre pitched well, but the
bullpen gave up two runs, and could hold the 4th run. In the eighth
inning, the bases were loaded with no outs for Fred McGriff, who
singled, and for George Bell. Bell grounded into a double play, making
the score 6-3, with a runner at third for Whitt. Whitt's out, and
Eckersley, who had come into a 2-0 count to McGriff, gets the A's out
of a jam. Close, but no cigar. Look for a crafty performance by
Key on Saturday. Oakland is sending Storm Davis to the mound (19
game winner).

Subject: Fans distracted by sex during Blue Jays game
Date: 18 May 90 04:08:33 GMT
TORONTO (UPI) -- Some baseball fans think the Toronto Blue Jays'
retractable roof SkyDome home should be renamed SexDome after fans
watched a couple make love in a hotel suite that overlooks the playing
field.
Tuesday night, during the team's 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners,
those with binoculars could see an older man and a buxom, blond woman
having sex in their suite.
Although the lights in the suite were off, the couple's room was
illuminated by a bank of television lights in the SkyDome.
The incident Tuesday follows one several weeks ago where a male
guest in the hotel, built into the SkyDome itself, masturbated in the
window of his suite in front of thousands of Blue Jays fans.
Police went to his room but no charges were filed because he
thought the window was fitted with one-way glass, SkyDome spokesman
David Garrick said.
``A lot of the guests think it's one-way glass,'' Garrick said.
``We're looking at putting tent cards in the rooms telling them
it's not and getting them to sign waivers when they book in,'' Garrick
said.
Garrick said such behavior isn't condoned because ``we bill SkyDome
as a family place.''
The SkyDome -- Toronto's $500 million sports and entertainment
facility opened last spring with the world's first fully retractable
roof -- has a 350-suite hotel built into its north end. About 70 of the
suites, which cost more than $600 a night during peak periods, overlook
the playing field.
Garrick said the couple had finished by the time police arrived
Tuesday. Garrick said he didn't know if police told the couple what many
in the crowd had seen.
Metro Toronto police Sgt. Brad Brigham said people who perform sex
acts in SkyDome hotel suites witnessed by those in the stands could face
criminal charges of performing an indecent act, which carries a maximum
penalty of six months in jail and or a $2,000 fine.
However, to be convicted, the accused would have to be intending to
offend those they knew were watching, Brigham said.
