Try this on for size:
New Hampshire has - no sales tax
- no state (ie. provincial) income tax
- cases of two-four on sale at <$10 (OK, maybe
its not quite the real stuff) and decent wine
at $3-4
- pretty darn good "quality of life"
As an ex-Ontarian, all I can say is "vive la difference"!

I just found out that the provincial MPs want to raise their salaries
15%. Now I know why they raised the taxes....

| Remember that the Liberal Party is $6 million dollars in debt.
Should we trust them to run the finances of the province and country?
Out of curosity, Does anybody know what MP and MPPs are making across
Canada, from Newfoundland to British Columbia (inc Ottawa)?
No, I am NOT a liberal, conservative or NDPer. I hear the liberal
is so far in debt that they cannot pay their rent for the head office.

As a former Ontario resident, a current Massachussets resident and
someone who works and shops (for obvious reasons) in NH, I have
to question the statement that NH has a "pretty darn good" quality
of life relative to Ontario. The term "quality of life" means
different things to different people. What are your criteria?
I believe that NH provides a good quality of life for those who
"have", but I am not so sure about those that "have not". I would
question whether the social programs in NH could hold a candle to
those available in Ontario.
As a general comment on the topic, I have never appreciated OHIP
so much as when I relocated my family to MA and found out what the
alternatives are. I admit that OHIP has its flaws, but they are
nothing compared to the drawbacks of the privately-run health care
that is available here. (I am referring to the way that health
care is managed and funded, not the basic quality of health care.)
I would like to think that there is a happy medium between being
taxed to death and not being taxed very much (relatively speaking)
but having less in terms of government services. It sure sounds
like the most recent budget really hurt. I guess the real question
is: are the tax dollars being efficiently used to provide important
programs, or is there an excessive amount of beaurocracy (?sp) being
funded?

| Last year, the Government had a surplus to work with, and decided
to spend it in an election year rather than reduce the provincial
debt. Now this year they raise taxes. This is irresponsible, and
the people of Ontario have a right to be angry. I like the Peterson
government too, but you can't condone fiscal stupidity because you
like the guy.

This looks like the right topic...Any comments on recents announcements
by the feds to tax healthcare benefits (starting with dental) and
inposing a tax on RRSP earnings? Am I the only one who sees something
wrong with this picture?

Any tax levied on the RRSPs before being withdrawn will be the straw
that breaks the camel's back for voters. Look for BIG TIME anger.

| As far as taxing RRSP's. I think this is just a stir to get people going so
that when they decide to reduce the RRSP contribution limits instead, people
will not be as angry.

| The talk now is
..another temporary ;-) income tax hike. Temporary in the sense that it
would be phased out (the hike that is).
..Increase levy on Lotteries
..gas tax
..and changing the capitol gains tax.
The analysis are saying the RRSP taxing is very remote but as always is
a discussion point.
