Ever heard of the Calgary Stampede, only the worlds largest Rodeo,
Calgary was put on the map a long time ago.

"World's largest rodeo" is equivalent to saying "World Series" (baseball) since
"the world" doesn't even come close to participating in (or watching) the event.
Not all the world's a ranch, and not every person's a cowboy. But people in
countries the world-round know where the Winter Olympics are being held... and
many are watching.

| | I had a lump in my throat while watching the opening day ceremonies.
Calgarians outdid themselves and showed a real sense of pride in
their heritage and city. I really enjoyed hearing the national
anthem being sung in an Indian language and then later in French
and English. I thought the arrangements were great. The only negative
part was having to listen to Peter Jennings, who hasn't been to
Calgary since it " was a small town", trying to make points on being
    a Canadian.

I watched with similar pride the opening ceremonies of the Montreal
Olympics but somehow, this show seemed better and I certainly felt
    proud of my native land.

    Well done Calgary,
    Carol

Perhaps your ignorance! The media coverage put Calgary on the map
in other places than North America. The micro community is now on
the macro view of the rest of the world. I certain that about the
majority of the 57 participating nations will get some sort of video
    feed.

Read in the Far East notes file that China is getting a few hours
    each day.

| | FRENCH, eh! best from Paris

Here in France, we never heard so much about Calgary than yesterday.
Of course Franck PICARD won the giant, but it's much more the fact
than it was the first gold medal since 1968 with JC KILLY.

Anyway i'll stay in front my TV till the end of the Olympics, cause
    it's a so beautiful show ( Starting 22.30 till 1.30 every night)

I did spend 6 monthes in TORONTO in 1985 working for Sperry and
their customer the STANDARD TRUST (Bank) and I 'm coming back this
summer to visit some friends in town. I want to go to Vancouver
    to - Any adresses ?

Have a cold one in Yorkville for me, thank's!

| | Well, Calgary had 16 days in glory of world media coverage; will
Calgary recover? I am sure they would. Made a profit, I was told.
That's the way to do it.

Now, where's Albertville? Sounds like it should be right near by,
eh? Actually southwest section of France, I'm told.

| | I'm sure this summer many families from across North America are
planning a vacation in or around Calgary. The Winter Olympics gave
us all (World) a tour of Calgary and the beauties both natural and
manmade that can be found there. I think that the Olympics help
put Calgary into every household in America. Unless they don't
read the papers or missed the Olympics. Certainly someday I hope
to visit. Lets not stereotype...There are some Americans that think
    alot of Canada.

P.S. I too was a bit upset with Peter Jennings comments during the
         opening ceremonies.

| | I know it's June already, but I was reading through all these old
notes, and I had to reply. I'm a native Calgarian, and so I can
rightly say that we've gotten a little tired of the hickness and
low calibre presentation of the Stampede. The Olympics were such
a surprise to me! I can honestly say that I've never felt greater
civic pride. I just wish that Toronto could win the bid for the
1990 Summers. Canadians (not just Calgarians) have established
a very reputable name for organization because of it.
