This is related to the previous note, but a little different, so I am writing a new topic. I will be attending a conference in Montreal at the Queen Elizabeth (Q.E.) Hotel on July 1-4. I am looking for inexpensive accommodations (less than U.S. $50/night for a single) that are comfortable. I pulled out some 20-year old maps and found out that the Q.E. is within walking distance of the Metro. That's good because I don't know if I will have a car there and would like to use the Metro to get around. Can anyone recommend a good inexpensive hotel or motel that is within walking distance of a Metro station? If it's within walking distance of the Q.E., that would be even better. One think I'm concerned about is air conditioning. The last time I was in Montreal was the summer of 1967 and it was hot (80's in the day, 60's at night). I can't sleep in a hot room and I also need quiet, which means I can't sleep with the window open if the place is near a busy street. So air conditioning is just about a necessity. I had considered staying at a B&B, but I did some in- quiring and found very few of these places are air conditioned. On the off chance that someone knows about a B&B that has A/C, or is in a very quiet area, I would be interested.

Bob, I wouldn't bother trying to find a cheaper motel because you probably couldn't find anything worth your while. I would phone the Queen Elizabeth Hotel and find out what the corporate rate is, you might find that it's around $50 U.S which works out to about $65 Canadian. Two other Hotels very close to the Q.E. are the Chateau Champlain and Bonaventure. Check these places out. All are easily accesible to the metro especially the Bonaventure which is a metro stop itself. I don't know of any cheap motels in that area but I think the Windsor Hotel my be the cheapest around. Its not as nice as the other three Hotels but I am sure it's better than any motel in that area. Hope you find what you're looking for, Glenn ;^)

From one who just finished up school at McGill in beautiful downtown Montreal, I remeber no such thing as an INEXPENSIVE hotel. The best bet, is using the Corporate rate at the various hotels, most take it, and the discount is quite considerable, especially with the exchange rate. The QE is situated such that both the metro and the train station are connected to the hotel. Also, there is the Citadel and Holiday Inn on Sherbrooke, within a few blocks of the downtown area. Also, the Shangrila, Four Seasons (more expensive), a Hilton, the Grand Hotel, and another smallish hotel on sherbrooke called the Chateau Hotel (???) which looks pretty reasonable. For those of you going up there now, Montreal is having their version on Winter Carnival (I thing it should still be underway). Plus they have done and currently doing extensive alterations to the downtown shopping area. Montreal is famous for its underground shopping malls. You wouldn't believe Ogilvy's now. Also, their working on more shops between Eatons and La Baie. Don't forget to visit Ben's for Montreals famous smoked meat (or as the French language watchdog now call it Boeuf Fumee or some such nonsense). Everything is pretty well connected by metro, or within walking distance downtown. Try not to take cabs, they have gotten even more outrageously expensive the last year. Have fun!! Tracy

I forgot to mention that this is personal travel, so I can't get a corp-\ orate rate. The rate for the Q.E. in the convention flyer is about $90 (U.S.) for a single; that is why I am looking for a better deal. The flyer also men- tions the Grand at a slightly lower rate.

Just because it's personal travel doesn't prevent you from asking for their corporate rate for DEC. I always thought that the corporate rate is extended to Digital employees...regardless of whether or not it just happens to be personal business.

.4 is absolutley correct. You do not have to be on business to take advantage of our Corporate rates. I have taken advantage of them several times for both accomodation and car rentrals. Bon Voyage! Mike |
