13.0. "Montreal info anyone" by 3363::BROWN () Tue Aug 25 1987 15:29

     Greetings

I am going to Montreal next week Aug 29 and need to know
where to go for entertainment, restaurants, parks for the kids
and so forth.....anyone out there know anything about Montreal?

I realize this is noted Toronto but it is the closest "notes file"
I found relating to Canadian cities

I am not up to date on kids attractions in Montreal... but if you
are coming up from the south, you could stop at a couple of out-of-town
attractions. Hemingford has a great Safari park, the type you drive
your car through amongst the animals.

And Granby has the Granby Zoo which as about as good a KIDS zoo as
you are going to get. Compact (not too far to walk around), lots of
washrooms/food and drink, "petting" and feeding allowed in certain
areas, and an area dedicated to carnival type rides, etc etc. And
animals too... lots of 'em.

These places about 45 minutes from Montreal.

Maybe an hour and a half to the east, is Upper Canada Village.
Terrific recreation of a village of 100 years ago, including 3 actual
operating mills. "Actors" dressed for the part explain what is going
on, it makes a great full day visit. If you sit down in the schoolhouse
be prepared to be be put firmly in your place by the school marm. ;-)
13.2Some ideas from Ottawa...POLAR::GILMOURWed Aug 26 1987 12:1921
For entertainment, I'd recommend seeing the exhibition of Leonardo da
Vinci's inventions and designs, which includes his drawings, and models
which have been made from his drawings, which is on at the Museum of
Fine Arts on Sherbrooke Street. It's quite a popular show so check the
availability of tickets before you head over.

The Expos will be playing St. Louis at the Olympic Stadium on Sept 7,8,9.
The stadium was the site of the '76 summer olympics and is a remarkable,
big place -- the locals call it 'the Big O' because of its shape.

For pleasant sight-seeing and shopping and eating, I recommend a walking
tour of 'Old Montreal', which you can find described in one of those pocket
guide books at a bookstore before you leave, or at most newstands in Montreal.

You can get to any of these places by the subway, which Montrealers call
'the Metro'. Driving in Montreal is best avoided, if possible. Get yourself
a good city map if you're going to attempt it -- AND AVOID THE WEEKDAY RUSH
HOURS -- there can be long and nasty traffic jams, especially along the
access routes to 'the island'.

for things to do within the city?

I am in a band that will be touring and Montreal is one of our
destinations. Can anyone tell me of the average cost (Canadian or
American money) of a hotel in or outside of Montreal?

This info is greatly appreciated! If you're in the Montreal area
I'll put you on the guest list as a thank-you!

    HEllo Everybody,

This is probably the wrong place, I'm sure. But could anyone tell
me about trades made by either the Expos or Les Canadiens or the
existence of any appropriate notes files.

I was watching the Expos play the Reds on ESPN here in Dublin the
other day and noticed a lot of new faces and didn't see people like
Mitch Webster, Bob McClure etc.. etc..

    Thanks.

    Ted in EIRE.

13.8The place is turned upside downTRCA03::OBRIENWed Aug 03 1988 18:0813
Mitch Webster was traded to Chicago, and Bob McClure is with the
Pirates (not sure, but I saw him a few nights ago). Also, there
was a trade with the Reds, with five players involved. Randy St.Claire
is gone, and a couple of other guys. I don't follow the Expos too
closely (an American League fan to the core), but there have been
a lot of changes since they changed general managers.

BTW, the Expos are playing good baseball these days. They have
a shot at second place, but the Mets are playing too well to be
beaten this year. Montreal lost a heartbreaker last night in extra
    innings.

Webster traded to the Cubs or the White Sox?
13.10More info from yet another GlennKAOM25::RICHARDSONHe who laughs bestThu Aug 04 1988 10:077
Mitch Webster and Vance Law both went to the Cubs. I don't know
who the Expos got in return. I don't think they got anything in return.

The Expos won last night 6 to 4 over the Pirates. For the rough
start they had this season, the Expos are playing pretty good ball.

    Hi Glenn,
Listen am I talking to a Montreal Expos/Canadiens fan or just a
friendly Canadian taking pity on an exile (smarm, smarm).

When the Expos beat the Reds the annoucer said the Expos got a young
prospect on whom they are very high.

Is there any news about the Canadiens like trades or boasts that
their new coach is making? I would appreciate any scraps you could
    throw my way.

    Thanks again.

    Ted.

I think Law came to the Cubs as a free agent (as did Dawson the
previous year), and Webster was traded even-up for Dave Martinez.

I think that the people in the last replies should have started
another note to talk about baseball. I, like other people are

ideas on where to go and what to do, and you guys are talking sports.

I would like to know about the underground shopping mall. I'm sure
that there are a lot of people out there who have visited this place.
Could you tell me about it??? What is actually under there?? Just

13.14Directement de Montral....MQOS02::A_COURCHESNEEncore 1 mois...Wed Aug 17 1988 10:0921
As a Montrealer, I often see all of this (undergroung ...) but I
don't realise what it brings to the city.

The underground city is really a maze of corridors that will bring
you from central station to "Place-des-Arts" without (or almost)
going outside. All along the way, you'll find specialty boutiques,
shops and restaurants. The heart of this city is found under the
Queen Elisabeth Hotel at metro Peel and/or MgGill (from Eaton to
    The Bay).

The metro (subway) is also a very nice thing to visit. If one has
the time, each station is, in fact, a work of art. Local artist
are involved in the design of stations and try to decorate each
one according to a theme. Even though millions of persons walk
these corridors each day, very few take the time to admire the work.
It is, though, something one should visit. Some stations are more
beautiful than others, but all offer someting different, someting
    special.

ballons at St-Jean sur le Richelieu (about 20 minutes south of
    Montral).

It is a feast for the eyes (all the colors), also note that DIGITAL
is spuncering an flying saucer shaped balloon, the biggest in this
    show. A must see.

    Bonjour Andri (ou Andre),

I am the one who started asking about Les Canadiens et Les Expos.
I am a Montrealais who now has to live in Dublin, Ireland. Dubliners
talk about their city as though it was the only one on earth But
I know that Montreal is still the most beautiful city I have ever
been to (and I have had the chance to see quite a few). It is a
North American city with something special. Montreal has a real
touch of class, it's pretty and romantic like the women of Montreal.
I miss it more the longer I live here. I'd love to get home.

Montreal is many things and Les Canadiens/Expos is a big part of
it. For our other friend, you should also see Place Desjardins and
Place Victoria as well. Montreal c'est magnifique.

    Ted.

I lived in Montreal for over 5 years and still go there often.(see
    the relatives)

About the underground city. Its true! I traveled the METRO for a
couple of years. Its very fast and all computer driven. The METRO
was built by BOMBARDIER, the same company who builds SKI-DOO and
has many contract in the US for building trains and subway cars.
I use to know people who lived in apartments in Montreal that
didn't have to go outside at all. They could travel to and from
work, shop, play, do anything without stepping one foot outside.
Thats what we mean by the underground city.

For night clubs, try Stanley street. There is usully a traffic
jam at 3am from the crowds of people leaving the clubs.

There's more. Its a great city.

One thing that may be interesting to others about the METRO, it

like the steel tracks in Toronto.

I tried DIR/TITLE=FOOTBALL and got no results.

I understand that an NFL preseason game has been scheduled in Montreal
during August. The teams as I understand are the Patriots and the
    Steelers.

    A few questions.

Where in Montreal will this be held? Exposition Stadium?
When will tickets go on sale? Will they be available through U.S.
ticket outlets? Such as Ticketron? I understand tickets went real fast
the last time there was a preseason game in Montreal.

I would be interested in going to the game and would appreciate any
answers to these questions which would help me.

An exhibition game between the Steelers & Patriots will surely be
one of the hottest tickets in town. The stadium holds about
60,000 people; if all the old Alouettes fans show up, that will
leave only 59,936 tickets for everyone else. After they're
through selling tickets to Patriots fans, 59,932 tickets would
       remain.

I wouldn't be surprised if they wind up playing in the Autostade.

The last two weeks in july are the construction people's vacations,
this means the city is pretty much deserted and the campings in most
parks are quite busy. Even tough it IS hot and muggy, by being fewer
people around makes visiting easier (mind you the amusement park La

dinner, so some "up market" as well as family-style recommendations
    would be appreciated.

We plan to do some skiing for a couple of days. Can anyone suggest a
family-oriented ski area within an hour or two of the city, or recommend
    a hotel?

Is there a school vacation week at this time in Montreal? (i.e., should
we expect crowds on the slopes?

Lastly, I ordered standing-room tickets for the Canadians/Bruins game on the
17th. Does anyone know how/where I could get a couple of seats? (I'm
not holding out much hope on *this* one. I would assume these are as
difficult to get as Bruins tickets are in Boston.)

Thanks in advance for any help and advice,

    Mike

13.53Must see's/do's for Montreal this monthWMOIS::JETTEFri Sep 02 1994 11:1215
I will be spending a couple of days in Montreal during the last week of
this month. We will actually be renting a cottage on Lake Champlain
and taking the subway into Montreal so we will not have a car. I am
assuing we can walk, take a bus or a taxi to just about anyplace in the
city that we want to go to. As we will only have a few days, what
would people suggest as to the "must see's" and "must do's". Also,
suggestions on places to eat--we will probably go 1 night to someplace
special/romantic so please make suggestions for that as well. Also,
if we are spending the whole day in Montreal sightseeing, we will not
be "dressed up"; i.e., nice dress, heels/sport coat & tie. Will this
be a problem if we do want to go someplace special for dinner?

Thanks for any and all info/suggestions.

Are you talking about Lake Champlain in New York (eastern shore) and Vermont
(western shore)? If so, that is one heck of a subway ride.

I thought the Biodome and Botanical Gardens were great. If you like to
walk and like nature it is wonderful. Cost is about 12.50 for a pass
for both. You can do one each day or squeeze them into one day.

Re: 13.55 - We do love to walk and love nature. What is the Biodome?
    Thanks for the suggestions.

13.57KAOP45::ROBILLARDFri Sep 02 1994 17:4314
The Biodome is group of 4 different environmental reproductions. I think there
is an indoor rain forest, polar setting, Canadian Sheild setting (?), and 1
other. I haven't been myself but my sister in Montreal has visited on many
occasions and loves it.

Other attractions:

- Montreal lookout on Mount Royal (the one that looks south over downtown and not
  the one that looks east.)
- Old Montreal
- St Joseph's Oratory

The Museum of Fine Arts on Sherbrooke (I'm not going to try to butcher
the french name) is worth a visit, the Contemporary Arts Museum at
    Place des Arts is not.

Montreal has plenty of wonderfully quirky informal places to dine, you
should eat in one of the older deli's, Ben's or Swartz's (Which isn't
actually call Swartz's on the sign outside but everyone calls it that).
You might also want to try the Bar-B-Barn on Rue Guy, rustic rib joint,
    been there forever.

For someplace romantic pick out a place in the old city when you're
there during the day, it's got the whole spectrum of restaurants
    including some nice cafes.

If you haven't left yet... We took a short trip to Montreal last year
and a friend took us to a restaurant named "Fondue-mentale" or some
similar play on words. I cannot recall the street, but I know it's on a
major road and easily reachable by the Metro. I'd highly recommend it
for your "specialty" choice as it's a cozy, not overly formal setting
(Jeans are ok) and they specialize in all kinds of cheese and meat fondue,
including some exotic meats I'm sure you've never tasted. And for your
sweet tooth at the end of the meal treat yourself to the the chocolate
fondue. You'll love it. Although not cheap, I don't recall it being too
    pricey.

I might suggest taking an organized bus tour on your first day. The
Office of Tourism can help set you up, I'm sure. We found it gives you a
relaxed overview of the entire city, you get bits of interesting
information you might otherwise never know, and it includes stops at some
of the previous recommendations as well as the Olympic Stadium (BTW-This is
where the Biodome is). Doing this, you get a good idea of the layout of
the city and have the option of returning to some of the sites the next
day on your own if you want to explore in more depth.

I would also suggest a late afternoon walk around the old town,
checking out different restaurants along the way, then pick one to your
liking to go back for dinner.

    Montreal's a beautiful city - have fun.

13.60Anything happening next week?WMOIS::JETTEFri Sep 23 1994 10:518
Well, we'll be leaving on Sunday for Alburg, VT (thought we were
staying in St. Albans). Alburg is even closer to the Canadian border
so we will be that much closer to Montreal and can't wait to visit.
Anything special going in there next week? Any more suggestions of
    "must see's"?

    Thanks!

I have a confession to make.

I am grievously addicted to NTN Interactive Trivia. You know, the
nationwide trivia game on tv screens in bars and suchlike. I know
you've got them up in The Great White North; Canadian players often
show up in the top twenty (I see you all nodding your heads in a proud
    fashion).

So here I am, planning a long weekend in Montreal this month, and I
realized - omigawsh! I have only ever noticed ONE bar in Qubec show
up on the top twenty list, and it went by so fast I didn't catch the
name, only that it was in La Salle (sp?).

The friend I'm meeting in Montreal also enjoys this game, but he
doesn't live there and doesn't know of any places where we might find it.

Can anyone help me out by posting or mailing a list of suggested NTN
Interactive Trivia Endowed Watering Holes? I promise not to spend my
entire visit holed up in a bar with my fingers poised, trembling, over
the keypad whilst getting Girl Drink Drunk.

    mz_deb,

My nefarious sources indicate that there is a Hawaiian-type bar in
Lasalle called the Haraki (sp?) that may have the game.

Ahha, a Hawaiian type bar. I foresee coconut flavoured drinks with
rum soaked fruit and paper umbrellas.

Thank you, jc. We'll be checking it out 8^).
