| | Try the Cole's World's Biggest Book Store (I think that's the name)
on Elm Street (1 block North of Dundas) and Bay in Toronto. Not
much ambience, but a great selection.

| | OTTAWA:
A few local specialty bookstores (that carry "books" rather
than "merchandise"):
    DOWNTOWN:
          Prospero  Books downtown store, great for browsing;
general bookstore, strong in non-fiction and in computer
          books

    GLEBE area:
Octopus bookstore strong in counter-culture stuff,
historical and literary criticism, marxism, women's.
House of speculative fiction: excellent for used
          science fiction etc. I hear.
Several other interesting used bookstores on Bank Street
in the Glebe within a few blocks, including a detective
          mystery specialist.
    MARKET area:
Food for thought: cooking books, plus a variety of
          unusual books.
Sunnyside bookstore: wide variety of mystical, eastern,
          new age, other off-beat stuff.
TORONTO:
Bob Miller Bookroom is a must. Haven't been there for many
years but it was great for browsing, books of all kinds.
      Central location.

--- If you or yr friends are into kids books, there are some good
Canadian authors that you probably won't find in the states much.
Robert Munsch comes to mind as author of many excellent illustrated
books, I forgot who the illustrator is, but they are great.

    re:.1

I've shopped in other Coles' before. About average for a chain
bookstore, but if this really *is* the "world's biggest bookstore",
    it sounds worth checking.

    re:.2

Yes, I am somewhat into (among other things) children's books.
One Canadian author of such that I do like is L. M. Montgomery.
Only about half of her two dozen or so books are in print in
the US. I have found a number of others during my various forays
    into Ontario.

| 5.4 | The Children's Bookstore | JEREMY::MAURENE | Maurene Fritz, Jerusalem | Sun Aug 02 1987 01:21 | 17 |
| | I've been away from Toronto for a year, but while I was there, THE
place to buy childrens books (and tapes and records) was The Children's
Bookstore on Markham St. Markham St. is near Bathurst and Bloor
(not to be confused with Markham Rd. in Scarborough). The Children's
Bookstore has great selection, and the staff is helpful and
knowledgeable. I suspect that out-of-towners could order through
    them, too.

I think the Mariposa-in-the-Schools tapes make great gifts, especially
for American kids, who almost certainly won't have them.

There are lots of specialty bookstores in the Bloor-Bathurst area,
so allow time for browsing, if you can. There are also good bakeries
and eateries...in case you get hungry.

| | If you're interested in used books, I think it's Queen Street, not
too far from the Eaton Center area, that has about half a dozen
used bookstores, with a wide selection.

Maybe someone has more precise information?

There used to be a few really good used book stores on Notre Dame
near University and also St.Jacques near McGill Street. I haven't
been there in a while but if it still exists you can find some really
remarkable books there. As I recall, the book store was pretty
    close to Place Victoria.

| 5.7 | Some Toronto Stores | TRCA03::MCAULEY | Patrick McAuley, Toronto Reg'l Off. | Mon Aug 17 1987 16:39 | 33 |
| | In Toronto, one of the Queen Street West book stores of note is
Page's. Known for artsy stuff and all manner of sexual orientations,
but other "normal" things too. There's also a Sci-Fi book store
(name escapes me, but it LOOKS like a sci-fi store), and a comic
book store as well as other more obscure things. This stretch has
also become a haven for people in the arts and entertainment field,
i.e. they live there as well as gather there. It's a trendy, though
not a plush area, so the people who live there are ones who haven't
"made it" yet in the entertainment world. That also means they
tend to be a bit wierd -- you want to be careful you don't get poked
by spikes (on peoples' heads) or bruised by chains and other garb.

The other thing you find plenty of onQueen Street West are computer
stores -- the hole-in-the-wall type that sell clones. Names like
Computronix and Computerama and Unisys; no, guess that last one's
not there, it just sounds like it should be!

All of these wonders are to be found on Queen Street between University
and Spadina, with a few stragglers of the same kind stretching past
    Spadina toward Bathurst.

There are a couple of Edwards' Book Stores in Toronto which tend
to be good. I think there's one in the Queen West area, and there's
also one at the corner of Sherbourne and Bloor streets.

One of the old established book stores is the Albert Britnell Bookshop
on Yonge Street just north of Bloor. Traditional fare, lots of
    Canadiana and helpful staff.

    Cheers,

    Pat.

| | re: previous message, the sci-fi bookstore is called BAKKA .

Re: Edwards book stores, at Yonge and Eglinton (midtown Toronto) there
is a 'rare' book store just steps from the Edwards that is there.
Don't know the name, it's not too large but may be worth a stop if
    you're subwaying around.

| | Best overall computer bookstores are:

    Siliconnections, 10th and Alma
    UBC Bookstore

If you are looking for Mass Market stuff, commonly available titles,
    (even in Computer field) try

    Book Warehouse (discounted, deletes, etc)

No Barnes & Noble that I know of.

| | If any of the TRC/TRO folks happen to be browsing through the Queen St.
used book stores, could you see if they have a hardcover copy of "And
No Birds Sang" by Farley Mowat. He's just published a sequel which I'm
hoping to get for Christmas, and I'd like to get a copy of the first
one which I read some time ago. Thanks!

| 5.12 | Bookstore on or NEAR Robson Street/Vancouver | PAULUS::PAUL | Oliver Paul, Int'l Systems Eng. Frankfurt/Germany (FRO) | Wed Sep 01 1993 04:45 | 18 |
| | I asked in 5.9 for computer bookstores in Vancouver since some friends
visited Vancouver around that time. They couldn't get the book I wanted
    ("Life with UNIX").

Now, I will be in Vancouver myself from October 15th - 21st. Can anybody
(I guess it will be Pieter again ;-)) give me the phone number of a
bookstore on or NEAR Robson Street ? I will stay in the Sheraton Landmark
(Robson Street) and I guess if I order this book (by phone) a month in
advance, they will have it in October. I remember being in a bookstore on
Robson St. on the opposite side of the Sheraton (in the middle of the
"hill") where I bought some german newspapers, something like
"International Books". Maybe they could order it for me ?!

    Many thanks in advance.

| 5.13 | Phone number ? | PAULUS::PAUL | Oliver Paul, Int'l Systems Eng. Frankfurt/Germany (FRO) | Mon Sep 27 1993 04:45 | 14 |
| | Re. 5.12:

I still have no answer from anybody. Doesn't anybody know the telephone
number of one of these bookstores on Robson ? Maybe somebody can look it
up in the yellow pages ?! I only have two more weeks till I come to
Vancouver and I guess the bookstores have to order it at least two weeks
in advance to have it on stock.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Ciao,
