Well I guess technically we could do it but... I think it would
be easier to just say that this notes file is for both Toronto (80%
of Canada anyway) and Canadian issues/questions.
If Canada is now a "topic of discussion" in this notes file-- never
use any of the following words/phrases:
1. Eh
2. Hoser(s)
3. Doug and Bob McKenzie
4. Moosehead Beer
5. Igloo(s)
6. Great White North
7. CBC
8. Canadian Bacon? (back bacon)

| I am an ex-Montrealer. I moved to New York about 3 years ago to expand
my industry expertise in the development of software for the financial
industry.
Only a Canadian can appreciate this very true story I am about to
relate.
After being at DEC 3 months, I was told that one our software
specialists was being transferred to "The Great White North".
Afterwards, I found out that he went to MARLBORO (Mass)!
Its nice to hear from the folks back home!

1.7 | Still taking intros? | PULMAN::ENGLISH | | Thu Jan 07 1988 12:27 | 18 |
| Well, it looks like this is the whoareyou note if #14 isn't.
Hello/Bonjour! I am Tom English, a software engineer working in
Chelmsford Massachusetts, too far south of Canada for my liking.
I live in New Hampshire, which at least borders on Qubec, but still
several hours' drive from there.
As Canada is my favorite country outside of the U.S., i was pleasantly
surprised to find this conference. I hope the conference gets really
active, and i'm looking forward to exchanging some Canadian travel
information with some of you who know the country better than i
do.
I've travelled extensively in Canada and have always enjoyed it;
especially the out-of-the-way and off-the-beaten-track places.
Be seeing you!

I am Ken Clough. I was born in Toronto (well actually in Scarborough).
I left Toronto some 20 years ago. Since then I have returned only
once, two years ago for a short visit. Toronto has changed a lot in
that time, all the buildings are smaller (or am I bigger).
I have living in Zurich Switzerland for the last seven years and
before that in various parts of England. I currently work as a
software specialist in Banking and Insurances and before that in
factory automation. Variety is the spice of life.
I intend returning to Canada within the next four years, but I am
not sure where I would like to live, probably Vancouver or
Toronto.

1.12 | Still think CANADA's the best place to be! | DUB01::EGRI | | Fri Jul 22 1988 08:30 | 14 |
| Hello. I'm originally from Montreal now living in Dublin Ireland.
The last time I talked my wife (who is Irish) to move back to Canada,
we lived in Brampton. I quite liked TO and am just interested in
what's happening at home. The Irish newspapers don't give you much
info unless it has some direct impact on the Irish themselves (much
like the Americans I expect).
I'd be interested in anything related to CANADA or TORONTO to start
with.
All the best,
TED EGRI.

1.13 | Are there any Westerner's? | PAULUS::GREIN | | Tue Sep 06 1988 09:54 | 26 |
| Well, I'm glad I stumbled over this conference.
I've only read notes from the US so far, so it was great to finally
find a Canadian notes conference.
I was born in Montreal, then lived in Germany for 10 years, then
moved back to Canada and lived first in Toronto and then in Winnipeg
bevore once again moving to Germany. I guess you could say, I've
travelled a bit!
Within Canada, I've also seen a few places. Montreal, Toronto and
Winnipeg (of course), Regina, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.
I'm not too sure yet, which place I would prefer to settle at, if I
were to go back to Canada.
Therefore, it would be nice to get infos from all over (not just
Toronto). From what I've seen, I did like the western section of
Canada a whole lot, but that's the section I know the least about
- so if there's any Westerner's out there reading this note, please
give me some information about your city (advantages and disadvantages).
I would be glad to return the favor to anyone, by giving you
information about and answering your questions on Germany.
Hoping for some news from home,
Caroline

| I am Ernie Mondou and I work in Littleton, Mass. My father was
born in St. Bonaventure, Quebec. I have only had the opportunity
to visit Canada a few times, mostly Montreal, and was always
very impressed with the friendliness of the people I met.
Even the cab drivers were friendly ! I can't say that about
the U.S. Hopefully I will return to Canada this year to visit St.
Bonaventure for the first time and see the area where my father
lived.

1.15 | | CADSE::WONG | Le Chinois Fou | Wed Jan 11 1989 19:35 | 28 |
| Hmmm....I could have sworn I had an intro note here.
I'm originally from the great and fabled land of Quebec City. I
left the homeland in '68 and moved to Ontario for a year before coming
to Boston.
I've been away from my hometown for about 18 years and only had
an opportunity to visit it again this past February, getting into
town about an hour before the typical blizzard that dumped a foot
of snow in an hour. What a welcome! It was so nice to visit the
city again! I had gone back to where I used to live (3345 Du Colisee
Avenue, a few blocks from the Colisee). The old Carnaval is still
the great party that it's always been.
I visit Toronto on a regular basis now (I'm frequently seen at Eaton
Centre) and I occasionally make trips up to Durham, which is about
100 miles or two hours north of Toronto (17 miles south of Owen
Sound).
It's nice to talk to all of you native Canadians.
Benson Wong
CAD Systems Engineering,
Chelmsford, MA
PS: I've been a Canadiens fan ever since I learn to skate in the
back of Holland School in uptown Quebec City.

Actually, it's "The Mad Chinaman"...loses something in the translation.
Since I'm originally from Quebec City, I figured that it would be
appropriate to have it in French.

| Hi,
I'm Paula Roy, I live and work in Merrimack, N.H., but my heart
is in Terrebonne, PQ Canada (my fiance is there). I spend many,
many, many weekends in the Province of Quebec and have visited Ottawa
several times. I just love to ski in the Laurentians and at Mont
St. Anne outside of Quebec City. I can't wait for snow (it snowed a
little last weekend when I was there). Anyway, I need to learn
alot about Canada et beaucoup de francais because I plan to relocate
somewhere outside of Montreal in a year or so.

1.24 | Expatriate Nova Scotian | 11SRUS::HEWITT | Standard du jour | Thu Jan 17 1991 13:01 | 16 |
| Alex Hewitt - Development supervisor with Languages group located at the
Spitbrook Road facility in Nashua New Hampshire. I've been living in the United
States for twenty years. I still consider Halifax Nova Scotia to be my "home"
town and I am still a Canadian citizen. I've often thought about becoming an
American citizen but can never quite bring myself to make the change. My wife
and two daughters are all American citizens. Every so often I consider moving
back to Canada (kind of takes in some territory eh?) but family ties keep me
here. I last visited Nova Scotia in September of 1990 and greatly enjoyed
myself. I still have friends in Halifax and in fact we usually stay with them
when we're in town. Next month, I will be attending Canadian DECUS in Ottawa
and am really looking forward to the visit since I have never been there.
Anyone having any suggestions for what to do while in the area would be
appreciated.
-Alex

1.25 | I know it's not the right place, but here I am! | RTPSWS::ANITA | What? Me, worry? | Thu May 02 1991 17:27 | 21 |
| Hi, y'all!
I'm a recent "transplant" to the DEC Research Triangle Park office in North
Carolina (US), after living in New Hampshire for 7 years, Massachusetts for 2,
and being born and raised in *the Bronx* (NYC) (I won't say how many years -
that would give my age away!).
I'm working down here in Sales Support in the manufacturing and engineering
area, with a secondary focus on ULTRIX systems. One of the accounts I'll
be working with is Northern Telecom, quite a large presence in The Park.
I've been to Montreal several times (twice in July '89!), plus I have several
Canadian friends I met through 2 holidays at Club Med. I'm planning on a
holiday in Vancouver/Victoria (all right... and Seattle) some time in late
August or early September. As I'll be going with a friend of mine, I'll
be enquiring, at a later date, as to where are good places to go to meet
(fun) people (read: male, single - hey! I'm not stupid!) in those cities.
Cheers,
Anita Magenheim

| HI...
I'd like to add my intro. (I've been a steady reader and observer
for last four years.) I was born in Montreal, almost 3 decades ago,
lived in a small town called in Cowansville (any takers?)when I was,
lived in Toronto 'til I was nine, and have been in Boston ever since.
Right now, by day, I spend hours in Littleton as s/w engineer
in T & N and by night, I'm a tired couch potato in Newton, Mass.
But I go up to Toronto about every two years or so to visit
relatives spread across there and the rest of the country. I've
even gone to the DEC office up by Yorkdale to see if there were
openings. So you see...once a Canadian, always a Canadian.
BTW, where are the DEC locations of Mr. Frozen Road Apple, Scooter,
Boris Karfbunk?

1.33 | canada/hamilton | POLAR::WILSONC | | Fri Mar 10 1995 21:10 | 16 |
| Hey, what has happened to Canada lately? Nobody interested? If the
person who wanted to know if anybody was from Hamilton, well here I am.
Hamilton is suffering these days due to the restructuring of the steel
industries so its looking a little like a ghost town. The Tiger Cats
are still a team if you cared. The wind still blows all of the
pollution over to toronto which is fine. Not much has changed in
Hamilton over the last decade, a couple of new hotels, an arena, not
much really, its quite depressing actually. The Hamilton airport is
doing better business since Toronto has grown significantly and cant
accomodate the increase in international traffic. So if any one who
reads this is planning a trip to toronto consider Hamilton! It's only
1 hr away from the big stink (toronto). Consider that it takes about
just as long to get out of the airport in toronto as it does to get out
of the Hamilton airport and drive to the toronto airport. You may not
save much time but if stress free travel is what you prefer then
Hamilton will be glad to accomodate.

| I don't know where you're getting your info about Hamilton Airport (we
locals call it Mount Hope Airport) but unless your using the disguise
myself as a FedEx package route I would expect to find easy travel
through Hamilton. Cargo business (UPS, FedEX et al) is booming since
the airport runs 24 hours and Pearson shuts down from 00:00 to 06:00
but there is only one scheduled carrier, USair Express, Dash 8 service
to Pittsburgh and Cinncinati I only I think.
