Hi A customer has a VAX 4000 model 105A with 3 x RF36E internally running OpenVMS 6.2. Two of which is now mounted as a shadow set off one DSSI bus. Due to new requirements, he has to order another hard disk of similar type to mount it with the 3rd RF36E as another shadow set off the 2nd DSSI bus. The problem here is all DSSI hard disks have already phased out. What type of hard disk should we propose to this customer in order for him to mount as a shadow set with the existing RF36E ? This customer has another pair of spare RF362 hard disk and a R215F expander box. Can these pair of hard disk be mounted in the R215F ? If so, can each hard disk from the RF362 be mounted as a shadow member against each RF36E hard disk that is residing in the VAX 4000 model 105A ? On top of this, the customer is currently using a R400X-B9 with 2 RF73 and 1 x RF74 for another VAX 4000 model 600 running OpenVMS 5.5. With this R400X expander box and in Split bus mode : Can th top tier (four storage cavity) which dedicates to one bus be connected to the VAX 4000 model 600 ? whereas the lower tier (three storage cavity) which dedicates to another bus be connected to the VAX 4000 model 105A ? Can the two buses on the R400X be connected to both VAXes as bus 1 connection ? ( in this case, all hard disks inside the two VAXes are connected via bus 0; while all hard disks in the R400X are connected via bus 1 ) Regards, Mui Choo

:The problem here is all DSSI hard disks have already phased out. DSSI storage widgets were phased out several years ago. DSSI was replaced by SCSI. (The RF36 series was retired back in mid-1995, the RF74 series in mid-1994.) :What type of hard disk should we propose to this customer in order for :him to mount as a shadow set with the existing RF36E ? The customer needs another RF36E (used or reconditioned), or the customer needs to replace the existing disks with SCSI storage widgets and an HSD-series DSSI-SCSI adapter. To be shadowed, the disks must share the same disk geometry, which usually rules out most cross-disk-model shadowing... As for your enclosure-cabling questions, I don't know... | |||||

Mui, Please look at the current Systems and Options Catalog for VAXes. It lists what is supported for the VAX4000-106A and the VAX4000-705A (amongst the new stuff). It will show you the new SCSI drives that are supported, and naturally we're testing newer ones now. With the new disks you can get a LOT more storage than just a few years ago. jim |
