4344.0. "RZ29's seen as Generic devices on 4000-100" by SIOG::ODONNELL () Wed Jan 29 1997 05:58

    Hi,

    	A customer of mine has a BA350 with 2*RZ29's and 2 *RZ28's
    installed which is connected to a 4000-100.At VMS level the Drives are
    seen as Generic SCSI devices do I need to upgrade the firmware for the
    drives to be seen as RZ29 or RZ28's ? .

    			Thanks in Advance

    			Brendan.

    Sounds like the operating system is below VMS 6.1. This is normal
    for OS's that were before the drives were qual'd

4344.2Various Considerations...XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Jan 29 1997 15:5416
   The "generic" label is common when the necessary device information
   was not built into the OpenVMS kernel.

   The SCSI device recognition mechanism was changed at V6.2, and in
   V6.2 and later, OpenVMS now queries the drive for its name.

   As for whether or not you need to upgrade the firmware in the RZ29
   drives, you'll need to ask that of the folks that keep track of the
   current RZ firmware releases.

   You'll also want to check and see if the BA350 enclosure has been
   updated to support the RZ29 drives -- this configuration may (will?)
   result in overheating problems. (There was an upgrade kit for this
   purpose that included new fans and some foam pieces: BA35X-MJ.)
