4164.0. "acc crashed - v4.1" by CSC32::J_HENSON (Don't get even, get ahead!) Wed May 07 1997 12:18

acms v4.1, ovms v6.2, alpha, acmsdi v2.2 eco 1

I don't know what has happened. I posted this as note 4162 on
Monday, but it has disappeared. Maybe I'll have better luck this
time.

A customer (Banker's Trust) is reporting an acc crash. His system is
primarily a backend to an acms desktop server. There may also be a few
SI agents that submit requests.

The acc is dying. In the swlup log, only acmsmss-e-interr, internal err
detected is reported. The accouting log shows that it died with
a status of 0. There is not acc process dump. The atr log did
not have any relevant information.

This occurred on a development system, and has happened more than once.
However, the customer reports that he has not been able to see
any consistency with this.

I will post the swlup and accounting log info in the next reply.

The customer will consider upgrading to 4.2 if we can give him some
assurances that it will fix the problem

For now, the customer really only wants engineering to look at what has
happened and make whatever determination we can.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Jerry

We usually put all fixes that were made into the Release notes for
a given version. So, unless you see something spelled out as being
fixed, then you cannot make an assumption that something is fixed.

Upgrading to ACMS V4.2 will give them 2 things, the removal of
CMA from all ACMS processes except for CP, and the ability for us
to trace events on customers systems for problems that are intermittent
or not easily reproduced. For a situation like this, we would setup
some tracepoints in ACC and send the customer a new ACC image that
would report to the trace monitor. When the ACC dies, we'd have a
better idea of the events leading up to the process crash. We
would then, hopefully fix the problem, and give them a new image
    with the fix.

Note 1.14 describes what happened to the notesfile. It had not
been backed up prior to the disk being stolen.

I have a couple of questions.

Is 4.2 available yet on the cdrom distribution or through ssb, or
do we need to make special arrangements to get it to a customer?

What steps are necessary to the the specialized acc? This sounds
to me like what we need, given that there are so few footprints
with this particular problem.

Also, the customer has just informed me that the problem just re-occurred,
and is pushing for an elevation.

What is your preference? Would it be better to upgrade to 4.2 for the
enhanced error tracing, even if there's no reason to believe that the
problem will go away, or should I elevate?

Thanks,

Jerry

FWIW, I just checked the 4.2 release notes and did not see any mention
of a problem like this being fixed.

First, since this a customer problem, it should be elevated to
    engineering in a formal matter.

Second, they need to install ACMS V4.2 in order for us to do
the tracing. They can run with just the V4.2 kit and see if the
problem re-occurs. There is already some tracing in ACC, but it
may be MSS stuff only. We'll have to look at ACC and decide
where to put additional trace points in and then get the image
    to the customer.

The kit will be on the June CDROM but the kit can be copied
    from CLUSTA::ACMS$V42KIT.

I have discussed this with the customer and we have agreed to upgrade
them to 4.2 and hold off on an elevation. If the problem recurs, I'll
do the IPMT.

    Jerry,

While you are waiting for the customer to upgrade, you might try
getting the SHOW_QUOTA.COM command procedure from the FREEWARE
CD. This would then be run using the ACC's pid, if it crashes
again you can check to see if a quota has been exceeded. I have
seen other processes crash without a trace because of a quota
    problem.
