4108.0. "ACMS migration?" by HGOVC::PATRICKNG () Tue Feb 25 1997 09:21

    Hi,

A customer wants to get information the future direction/development of
ACMS. They have written a number of ACMS applications and to review
whether they should continue more applications on ACMS.

Is there a migration path to ACMSxp? What are benefits to migrate ACMS
    to ACMSxp?

They have about 5 high-end VAX on two clusters. The first step is to
migrate the system to Alpha. They are looking for whitepaper to tell
them migration afford and issues. Besides Writing and Migrating
Applications for OpenVMS/AXP, is there any other source of good
    information for migration ACMS applications

    Many thanks,
    Patrick

As far as documentation, there is a ACMS Migration guide that is
part of the ACMS documentation set.

ACMS is still being actively developed, in fact a new release is
scheduled for April 1997. As far as futures go, we'd be interested
in hearing what your customer plans on doing with ACMS and what
features they'd like to see in the product.

    Bill,

A large customer asked whether ACMS has planned to go for Web front
    end.

I like to hear the position of ACMS and ACMSxp. Should ACMS customer
migrate to ACMSxp or stay in ACMS?

I can't comment too much in this public forum about what's
coming in future versions of ACMS but there are definite plans
to assist customers in adding Web front ends to existing
ACMS applications. This technology already exists, we have
several customers that have already added this feature.
Our goal is to make it as easy as possible.

I'd suggest you contact the ACMS product manager, John Fergusen.
Some things are still in the very early planning stages but
we'd be interested in understanding what your customer wants,
the timeframe for implementation, and any other details they
    	might want to share.

I forgot to address your second concern, that is, ACMS vs
ACMSxp. ACMS is still a very viable product and will continue
to be supported and enhanced well into the next century.
ACMSxp is targeted more towards new applications that must
exist in a more open environment or on other platforms
besides OpenVMS. There are features in the next release
of ACMSxp that will allow ACMSxp tasks to call ACMS tasks
and still maintain the distributed transactions.

Again, contact John Ferguson or Jerry Hershey (ACMSxp Product
    	manager) for more details.

    	Bill
