2030.0. "Transamerica Card" by AOSG::CHALMERS () Thu May 29 1997 10:49

Does anyone have any experience using the Transamerica Card?

As Boston Globe subscribers, we received a promotional offer for this
card, which claims to give you a 20% discount on food/drink at a number
of area restraunts. The premise is that you would present this card to the
waitstaff in lieu of a credit card, and that they would process it
just like a credit card. The charges would automatically be booked to your
charge account of choice (Visa, MC, Amex). Then, when you received your
monthly statement, you would see two line items: one listing the
initial charge, and one reflecting a corresponding 20% discount.

Supposedly the card is provided at no cost to the user; the only
stipulation is that you must charge at least $100/year; otherwise, the
    account is cancelled without penalty.

Sounds a lot less cumbersome that using some sort of secondary discount
    card, and having the waitstaff calculate the appropriate discount;
however, I'm a bit reluctant to give some unknown company the right to
book charges & credits directly to my charge account.

Has anyone else used this service? Comments or experiences?

    Thanks in advance

We use it and are satisfied with it. There's quite a variety of
restaurants that offer the use of the Transamerica card, which is
nice...certainly more than the Entertainment Book (which is what
we've always used). We figure, on average, it saves us the tip
amount, effectively.

2030.2Same as Transmedia?TNPUBS::MCKINNONThu May 29 1997 12:493
We have a *Transmedia* card which has exactly the same terms but
the charge and discount comes off your Master Card bill. It's great
    - lots of excellent restaurants are offered.

A friend of mine has it and uses it all the time - it works just as
advertised. I've just applied for mine. Also, it pays to ask a restaurant
if they accept it - some new restaurants, that haven't yet appeared in the
list, do take it.
2030.4Also, Prime Card Visa discounts!NETCAD::DREYERI need a vacation!!Fri May 30 1997 16:29145
I now see a "prime card Visa" that offers many discounts too.

http://www.primecard.com/ has all the info, sounds really good. I'll post
some of it here:

Whether you're out for a night on the town, or

shopping the town, PRIMECARD VISA is the only

 card...

...that pays* you 15% to 40% every time you dine

at over 300 Boston area restaurants like...Legal

Sea Foods, Pizzeria Uno, Sonsie, Blue Wave,

 Davio's, 29 Newbury, Jimmy's Harborside,

 Bisuteki Japanese Steak House, Salamander,

 Providence, Spinnaker Italia, Cottonwood Cafes,

 The Oregon Club and Zuxuz.

...and pays* you 15% to 40% every time you shop

at retail merchants, including Strawberries Music

& Video, Betsy Jenney, The Floral Home, Rich's

CarTunes and through our new catalogue

program which includes BOSE, Seiko, JVC and

 Reed & Barton.

...that saves you 50% every night you stay at over

4,000 hotels, vacation resorts and championship

 golf courses, including Hiltons, Hyatts,

Sheratons, Westins, Omnis - USA (including

 Hawaii), France, Japan, Switzerland, Caribbean,

Italy, Sweden, Nepal, Russia, Mexico and Canada.

...that gives you up to 30% off every time you go

to the theater or the movies, including General

and Showcase Cinemas, Sony Theatres, Nick's

 Comedy Stop and Lyric Stage.

PRIMECARD also saves you money by making it

simple for you to transfer high-rate MasterCard,

VISA or retail card balances to your new

PRIMECARD VISA, where you pay only 9.8%**

 (introductory APR) for six months.

 How does PRIMECARD VISA work?

 Without coupons. Without additional cards.

 Without embarrassment or restrictions. Just

present your PRIMECARD and VISA does the rest

 - by automatically rebating you the savings on

your monthly VISA statement. You can call our

24-hour PRIMECARD VISA rebate hotline for

 updates of participating rebate merchants.

 What's the catch?

The No Annual Fee PRIMECARD VISA is accepted

at over twelve million locations worldwide. Some

of these merchants are participating in the

PRIMECARD VISA Rebate Program, and in those

instances, PRIMECARD VISA is able to offer you

automatic rebates and savings of 15% to 50%

every time you make a purchase.

 What does that mean?

It means you should apply now. You will not pay

an annual fee, and you will start to save money

every month with the only VISA credit card that

 pays you to use it!

 What does the press say?

U.S.A Today names PRIMECARD VISA the

number-one benefit card in the country.

I've got both Transmedia and Primecard, and while I don't use them too
often (there's not much desirable in Nashua, but see below), they mostly
seem to work. I prefer Transmedia for those places that take both, since
Primecard seems to take forever to credit the rebates. Certainly, when I
go in to Boston, I skim the books to see if there's somewhere nearby/worthwhile
that takes it.

But I see in the latest Transmedia update that the NH locations of Foodee's
now take it! This definitely means I'll be using it more often...
2030.6Transmedia, not TransamericaAOSG::CHALMERSMon Jun 02 1997 11:524
    re: .2

Yes, I meant to write "Transmedia" card. I've changed the title to
reflect this. Thanks for pointing it out.
