| I had the exact same problem calling via the Littleton LKG facility
486-xxxx FX line, trying to connect to ZKO as well. And the last time
I check, Nashua was firmly in New England! Or has the state of New
Hampsire been taken over by Canada? :-)
I tried some alternate FX numbers serviced by Maynard Area, and got the
exact same recorded message.
The only FX line that was local to me and still worked was a line in
Lowell serviced by the Marlboro area, but the best connect speed I was
able to get was a split speed 14400/7200 - ouch!
The Littleton/Maynard telecom support phone number is DTN-223-2420.
Maybe anyone that depends on FX lines should log a problem report.

| OK, Now I can get to ZKO. But what happens if I need to talk to other
time zones like Seattle or even Singapore (11-12 time zones
difference) !!
Even to Europe with a 5-6 hour difference it makes sense to call from
home to catch people there

| Usa a company telephone calling card.
You see, the cost _must_ be allocated back to your cost center.
Before, when we had leased lines that were underutilized outside of
business hours, there was essentially no cost for most DTN calls during
off hours.
Now that the leased lines outside New England are gone, every DTN call has
a real per-minute cost which must be accounted for.
The telecom industry has changed. With contractual volume discounts, it
is no longer beneficial to have leased lines except in short-distance
high-volume situations. I don't know what our discount with MCI is, but
with normal home users with $25 per month of usage able to get rates for
calls to Europe that are lower than undiscounted calls within New England,
we may be paying less to call Edinburgh than a low-volume user pays to
call Springfield. I've read newspaper articles that say the transatlantic
rates are heading into the ten cents per minute range.
Calling on your DEC MCI card from your home and dialling 700+DTN will cause
the call to be rated almost the same as if it had been placed from your
office phone.
