We did provide a patch image for the US Postal Service. I don't know
what the BL revision was. The image name is somewhat irrelevant. And
yes, the image they're speaking of probably was provided by Digital.
The engineer that issued the patch was Bob Richard. At that time Bob
was in Remote Access Engineering. But he's still near by... :-)
What is the problem?

Dave,
Thanks for the prompt reply. Seems that FS has been onsite
doing boxswaps for "broken" servers that won't load this
ENG2IP.SYS image. After a few go-rounds with replacement
servers, it all fell upon their FS account rep to get fixed...
who then called CSC. Not being aware of any special versions
for USPS, and assuming at first that the customer was doing
something weird or illegal, I booted the 700 with standard
V2.0 NAS to bless the hardware. When that proved to be OK,
but the box would still not load this ENG2IP, the question of
who owns support for that image takes on greater import, since
the customer will not be happy until this works.
Should I send mail to Bob? Or perhaps cut an IPMT? Again,
the FE is stuck with this until it works to the customer's
satisfaction.

3467.3 | Yeah, but what exactly doesn't work? | IROCZ::D_NELSON | Dave Nelson LKG1-3/A11 226-5358 | Tue Mar 18 1997 12:36 | 19 |

I guess I'd still be interested to hear what the symptom is. Why can't the
customer load the special image? It must have been working at one time.
What is the error?

You could do that. Probably Bob will have some of the same questions.

Hi Dave,
This is a confusing situation, compounded by a customer that is
somewhat unhelpful (to say the least) as well as the fact that the
MCS onsite person inherited the whole mess from someone else. By
the time he got involved the hardware had been swapped numerous
times and the customer was not exactly happy. Seems that the original
server, running the ENG2IP image, failed with a bad power supply.
It was swapped out but the replacement would not load (probably
due to asking for WWENG2 by default)....so it got swapped at least
once more before being dumped on the account rep.
They had somehow gotten that last replacment box loaded with ENG1 and
changed the software to this ENG2IP. It apparently then loaded
NAS and the customer ran some scripts against the new box...after
which it would no longer load...which is where I came in. One of the
things I tried was a factory reset. After doing so, we loaded NAS
V2.0 successfully. Then changed software to what the customer insists
needs to be run, (the ENG2IP image) and verified it loaded OK. The
customer then ran the scripts and tried a reboot...which then worked.
Since the whole thing was such a mess, who knows? Magic dust, perhaps,
or the factory default. I'm just glad it worked.
Bob did get involved and pointed out that while this was once indeed
a special patch for USPS, any extra functionality has been
incorporated into NAS V2.0 and the customer really should upgrade
to that version.....but convincing the customer of that might be
difficult (he clings to this patch like a drowning man to a life-
line). I've got a call into the MCS manager that is responsible for
that account and hopefully they can get this straightened out. If
the customer intends to run that patch and have an attitude about
it, that's his choice...but I'd at least like to see this documented
to spare someone else having to learn all this again....
I do appreciate the help given!
Regards,
DAP
