3450.0. "16 char limit for servicename" by ASHAM::H_ANDERSSON () Wed Feb 26 1997 09:44

    Hi,

    There seems to be a 16 char limit for "preferred service" on
    the portchar on the (all ??) terminalserver DS90M
    My customer are using TCP/IP and have been forced to change
    their domainnames. These DS90M are located in another domain
    than the "preferred service" and the servicename have become
    longer than 16 char.

    When the customer tries to change "LMEA.ERICSSON.SE" to
    "tn3270s1.ericsson.se" they get the following errormessage:

    Local> change po 4 preferred tn3270s1.ericsson.se
    Local -703- Value invalid or out of range, "TN3270S1.ERICSSO"

    Is there a workaround for this ???

    regards,
    /Hakan Andersson, CSC, Sweden

Not really. The limit for the service name is 16 characters. The only
thing I can suggest, if the customer doesn't want to corrupt their
DNS name space, is to use MENUs on the DECserver. You can then have
a selection of hosts to connect to, and the 16 character limit does not
apply to the content of the MENU items.
