3445.0. "Recovery Mgr for TS" by 16.67.96.117::dfaust (Dennis Faust) Mon Feb 24 1997 07:29

I have a customer with an extended LAN, using TCP/IP routers, with terminal
servers at the far ends of each link. These terminal servers (DECserver 90M)
have several printer ports set up and some unique port characteristics that
are somewhat a pain to reenter when a failure occurs. My questions is does
Digital have a product like clearVISN Recovery Manager that will work on a
DECserver 90M over a TCP/IP only link? I don't think that TSM will function
over IP only.

We have ASM (Access Server Manager). This tool is a 32-bit MS Windows
application, that connects to the DECserver via Telnet (over TCP/IP). It
has a "capture and restore" feature that allows setups to be restored to
DECservers. As long as the specific variables that you are interested in
are covered, this should work for you. In addition, it's a really nice GUI
configuration and management tool.

Dave

I downloaded Access Server Manager from the NPB Web site, and it's just what I
need. Thanks for letting me know about it.

Since it is available for download from the Web site, I assume that this is
freeware, that I can distribute to my customers without license. It that an
accourate assumption? If so, will this be distributed on the CD-ROM
distribution for the next wave of clearVISN? This is certainly a valuable tool
and would come in handy for a lot of folks. I had never heard of it, and doing
a search of the Web site for Access Server Manager delivers NO reference to an
SPB or release announcement. Whne we have stuff like this (and it's free), we
need to shout about it, in my opinion.

Thanks again for the pointer.

We'll need a ruling from product management on that. We distribute ASM as
part of the DNAS Multi-OS CD-ROM. In fact it _is_ the Windows (95/NT) kit
for DNAS. If you purchase a new DECserver, you get the DNAS CD-ROM. If
you already own a DECserver we have software updates available. I don't
know that we would call it freeware. The _license_ to use ASM is implicit
in owning an applicable DECserver. So it's more an issue of the revenue
we get from the software update media kits (about $600, I think, but that
may be subuect to change).

The policy in the past has been for the field organizations to use good
business judgement and give the software updates to customers when there
are customer satisfaction issues to be dealt with. Otherwise, we appreciate
the revenue.

I don't think so. We have our own CD-ROM for two reasons: 1.) DNAS is
export controlled software (encryption used for authentication) and
2.) the clearVISN folks have not had (or found) time to integrate us into
their product set. We're not a "switch" so we don't get much attention or
respect in NPB. :-(

Thanks!

We don't market this tool separately from DNAS.

I'll bring up the "free" issue with product management.

OK, I got the ruling. ASM (without the DNAS load images) is freely
distributable to DECserver owners. It is already on the _external_
Digital web site, and available to customers today. Assuming they have
the patience to dig that deep. :-)

We will not freely distribute the DNAS load images, and what I said in
.3 applies to that software (and ASM with the images included).

Hope that clarifies things.

Dave

3445.5Will ASM auto collect counters/status ?ZPOVC::PARRYCHUAParry Chua @ZPO, 65-3306311Thu Jun 05 1997 23:5610
    Hi,

Do we have any tools that will collect counters/status information from
    the DECservers 900 ?

This will help us and customer to manage/trouble shoot big pool of
    DECserver's.

    Thanks
