Note 4939.0 DS90M IP problem with frames of 256 bytes - resource err 2 replies
LEMAN::SCHEIDEGGER "Raymond @GEO - DTN 821-5236" 737 lines 17-JAN-1997 07:55
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
Customer has a problem with DS90M. DS90m is not responding when a frame is
equal to 256 bytes.
I suspect the DS90M to be in fault ... assuming the DS90M is not responding ...
Q1: Any known problem ? or IPMT ?
Q2: Is the ECO3 for DNSA 2.0 available )
Q3: Any fixes available ?
Thanks in advance
Raymond

Note 4836.0 POP removes 255th character of long email text 1 reply
CSC32::M_MENKHUS "Mark Menkhus (719)531-5853 (basem" 60 lines 28-OCT-1996 18:13
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
A customer reports a problem with the POP server under 4.1 eating the
255th character of mail text with very long lines.
Here is what he states:
I have an Alpha workstation running OpenVMS 7.0 and UCX 4.1, and have
POP
server enabled. Whenever I receive a message with lines longer than 255
character, in VMSMail there's a break inserted after the 255th
character,
and the 256th character begins on a new line. However, if I retrieve
the
email using a POP client, the 255th. character is always deleted
(meaning
the line contains 254 characters, new line begins with the 256th
character).
Example:
[A..0] = ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ1234567890
a set containing the letters A to Z and numbers 1 to 0 for a
total of 36 characters.
If my message is the following:
[A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0]
(a string of 10 of the above blocks for a total of 360 characters)
Case-A:
-------
In VMSMail, what I receive is:
[A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0]ABC
[D..0][A..0][A..0]
(2 lines, first has 7 of the above blocks and ends with ABC for a
total of 7x36+3=255 characters. Second line begins with D of the
8th. block and ends with the remaining 2 blocks for a total of
33+2x36=105 characters).
Case-B:
-------
If I grab the same email with a pop client, what I receive is:
[A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0][A..0]AB
[D..0][A..0][A..0]
(it's almost identical to case-A above, except that the last
character,
the 255th in the 1st line is deleted).
Can you help? Is there anything that can be done to avoid the 255th.
character from being erased when the email is extracted using a POPmail
client.

Hi,
I've a similar problem with the following config
PC ---PPP--- portX/DS90M ---ethernet--- AXP
It seems the problem we have is related to DS90M,
the problem happens with FTP and POP3 ...
Q: Are you also in a similar config with DS90M with NAS 2.0 ?

Raymond,
this doesn't sound like a LAT problem. You might better address this in
notes IROCZ::TERMINAL_SERVERS.
Remember that NOTES is not an official channel for raising customer
problems, so consider to raise an IPMT, if you can't get an answer via
notes.

Off the top of my head, I don't know why this count would be so high.
> Q2: Is the ECO3 for DNSA 2.0 available )
DNAS V2.0 ECO3 has been replaced by ECO4. You can obtain this ECO from
either the CSCs or the DECserver Network Access Software web distribution
site:
http://feenix.lkg.dec.com/~dnas/
But I doubt ECO4 will perform any differently than ECO3 in this case. You
could always check the ECO4 Release Notes to see if a problem in this area
was fixed.

Hi,
Your right. We can FTP a 255 byte file, a 257 byte file but not a 256 byte
file! This could explain several IPMT cases. Were tracking it down now.
Thanks for your help.
Jim's right though I don't believe the latest ECO will fix this problem.

Hi,
The ECO was done before the problem was reported so it doesn't include a
fix. Judging by our current work load we probably won't have a field test
image with a fix for this problem until mid February.

Hi,
A field test image containing a correction for this problem can be coppied
from NPSS::PUBLIC$DSK:[INTERCHANGE.DECSERVERS.DNAS].
Directory of PUBLIC$DSK:[INTERCHANGE.DECSERVERS.DNAS]
README.TXT;4 Description of corrections
MNENG2_FT10D03.SYS;1 DS90M compressed image
WWENG2_FT10D03.SYS;1 DS700/DS900 image
Please note that this is a field test image and has undergone a limited
amount of testing. It won't be supported beyond the next ECO which
is expected to be at the end of March.
